Roman Maciejewski (1910-1998)
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:59:28 PM »

A very important, albeit little known figure (little known outside Poland that is). This Polish composer studied at the Warsaw Conservatory in the 1930s. He was part of the students' strike after Karol Szymanowski was fired from his post over there. As a consequence, Maciejewski was expelled and never finished his composition studies. He spent almost his entire life abroad.

Szymanowski was his idol. Maciejewski even wrote his own set of Kurpie Songs (and a very good set it is too!). His best known work is a gigantic Requiem Mass. He wrote in something that could be described as a romantic (neoromantic? postromantic?) idiom. He is the author of the only important mazurka cycle written in Poland after Szymanowski.

Though it is not called a concerto, this is really a piano concerto:

Roman Maciejewski - Berceuse and Allegro Concertante
performed by Maciej Grzybowski (piano) and the Polish Radio Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Michniewski

Here's a sample to listen to:

And here are 4 of his Kurpie Songs (1932) - I'm not sure if that's the whole set. Possibly yes.

They are all performed by the Polish Radio Choir conducted by Wlodzimierz Siedlik
