Two small purchases - one made yesterday and one today ...

Geo Dude

The dice seem to be rolling in my favor lately when it comes to WTC 1's.  First the Egarr for just under $10, and today I found this one in like new condition for $5.

I cannot quite say I have developed much of an impression of her after the following CD ...

Bought this for $29 + shipping through Arkivmusic (first time using their site):

I'm not a big Gergiev fan, as everybody knows, but I couldn't pass on this great offer.

Well, one might prove to be rather bigger than the other.

The new erato

[Barber - Complete Orchestral Works - Naxos]

The VC should be a good place to start, IMO. :)

I'm not familiar with Klemperer's cycle, but more Brahms is always good! :)

Thanks Geo Dude - I like Klemperer in Beethoven and Mahler and think his Brahms should be pretty good too! :)
I've wanted this set for a while and it's pretty cheap on Amazon UK at the moment so I figured I should get it now before it goes out of print!  :D

That's a good cycle.  Also try Klemperer in the German Requiem if you haven't already. :)

My favorite Mussorgsky disc right there! Absolutely first-rate. I haven't heard the BPO recording, so please let me know how that one is. I found Abbado's later DG Mussorgsky disc to be lacking in excitement and intensity. It sounds rather smoothed over, but the LSO performances are top-notch. This Abbado/LSO performance of Night On Bald Mountain is one of the best I've heard. Hope you enjoy that recording as much as I have. 8)

By the way, the Alun Francis Casella 3rd symphony recording on CPO is much better than it's Naxos competitor. The performance has much more depth, which, for me, triumphs over a speed demon type of approach any day.

I listened to the Night on Bald Mountain on youtube from that disc, I really liked it.  Loved the phrasing of the piece within the orchestra.

I got the other disc due to the choral version of NOBM.

Next time I do purchasing, I'll look for the CPO.  I really have started to like Casella :)

Casella is a very uneven composer for me, but his Sinfonia "Symphony No. 3" is his masterpiece I think. It has a slow movement that will just melt your heart with its beauty. What is so profound about this symphony, besides the wonderful music, is that Casella was writing it as he was dying. It's as profound as a statement as Myaskovsky's Symphony No. 27.

I don't have much by Casella.  Just the first 2 symphonies CDs on Naxos, and the Naxos CD containing Scarlattania, the song, and the cello concerto.  I am not too fond of the first symphony, nor the cello concerto but the rest I really liked
