How was Brahms as a lieder composer? And how is the below set (Fisher-Dieskau accompanied by four pianists; Gerald Moore/Wolfgang Sawallisch/Daniel Barenboim/Sviatoslav Richter)? Maybe there are other individual recordings which are preferable (e.g. with women soloists)?

From Brilliant this is probably one of the greatest recordings in my collection, a definite must have for any collection:

Last night I made an impulse purchase which proved to have paid off handsomely  ;D!!  Again from Brilliant, and as it turns out from what I have been told this is also a must have:

As a lieder composer somewhat uneven. Lots of melodious, but somewhat undramatic, folksong settings. At his best; essential, as in the Vier Ernste Lieder or the two glorious op 91 songs with viola. Don't know this set, but hard to imagine it could be a letdown.

XB-70 Valkyrie

Does anyone own either of teh Oistrakh sets? I'm looking to get those soon.

I think this is the only Brilliant label disc I have so far, although I have the Beethoven String Trios on the way:

They are artistically on a very high level, and good recordings. If you like the music of both composers, these sets will not disappoint, or I eat my hat! ;D

Agree w/ Harry on the Ibert 2-CD set (I have the Roussel coming in the mail @ the moment) - includes Ibert's quite varied chamber works from 1916-1953; solo works for various instruments, e.g. harp, guitar, flute and others; to compositions w/ various combinations of instruments - 'largest' work called Le Jardinier de Samos w/ flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello & percussion - delightful variety of sonorities -  :D

What does Ibert sound like?
Well, I can tell you his Divertissement for orchestra is one of the prime examples of humor in music - particularly the intentionally ludicrous finale and the delicious scene when a bunch of drunk brass players crash Mendelssohn's wedding march.  ;D

Harry, is there any chance of Brilliant licensing Segerstam's Mahler cycle with the Danish National RSO from Chandos?
