I must say Brilliant Classics really have some fantastic sets at super-budget prices that are in the top league (independent of price). The ones I considered to be on this level and already have are:

Are there some more sets that really can compete with the best there is of individual performances (or more correctly include at least some "reference" performances")? Keep the recommendations coming!  :)

Add Barshai's Mahler 5, Wurtz's Mozart sonatas, Sanderling's Sibelius cycle, Cuarteto Lantinamericano's Villa Lobos cycle, & Gulda's LvB sonatas.  Not must-haves, perhaps, but pretty-nice-to-haves all.

Most certainly in the category "must-have".

That Schubert set I already have on my list. How is the Brilliant Classics Faure chamber music set?

I already have Barshai's Mahler 5, Wurtz's Mozart sonatas, Gulda's LvB sonatas and the Grieg chamber music set. How does the Sanderling Sibelius cycle rate against the ones I already have: Bernstein NYPO, Vanska, Berglund and Blomstedt? And how does it compare interpretation-wise?

I think I will borrow the Rubio Quartet's Shostakovich string quartet cycle from the library to begin with. I have already ordered the set with Borodin on Melodiya for £13!

Harry, I bought the Brahms set today on your recommendation!  :). I wonder how the piano trios compares with the Florestan trio that I have or the Amadeus quartet's set with quartets, quintets and sextets that I also already have!

The Borodin I also bought today as I like Rozhdestvensky in general. Is this one of the top sets for the Borodin symphonies?

Don't know the Brilliant set, but for a beautiful, authenically French set of Fauré chamber music at budget price - you could consider this one.

Q (sorry guys, for being off topic.. 8))

The new erato

If you can et Scarlet Johansen from Brilliant I would consider that essential.

But the Faure song set and the Faure Piano Music with Collard are extremly fine sets.

I don't get the appeal of Ms Johansen.  She was promising in The Horse Whisperer, but hasn't convinced me as an actress.  Otherwise, she appers to be a slightly chubby adolescent rather taken with herself and simpering like a child trying to hard to portray what she imagines to be "sexy."

Just what is it that Hollywood does to destroy talented young actresses?  (Johansen, Dunst, Skye, Portman...though the latter might yet turn it around)

Did you see Ghost World? That was where she won my heart. I think it's mostly her voice.

As you'll soon discover, the sonics of this set are absolutely superb.
