Yes. In The Romantic Generation Charles Rosen has a great deal of fascinating wisdom to impart about this piece, including about this original conclusion, and on the disc which accompanies the book there is a recording of him playing it.

Cool.  :)

I think it was never transferred to CD (at least that's what it said in the txt file that came with it). I have the mp3 if you are interested though  :)

I would be very interested!
Cheers

I think I'm starting to like this piece, especially the first movement.  The key for me, it turns out, is not listening to the Richter recording, which has lots of nice sonorities but no impetus to move forward.  Pollini's more unsentimental account brings the pieces together for me, particularly the luminous close of the last movement.

I applaud your determination.

I am learning this piece and just realised that I don't possess a single recording of it.

Any good recommendations please? :)

I think I rather like Pletnev's quirky take on it, especially the third movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx5A6am7A_0

Annie Fischer on a BBC disc; fantastic and intense performance.  You also get Kinderszenen and Kreisleriana - wonderful program.

Didn't we just have a whole thread about this?

Indeed, thanks. :)

Aeolian harp

Sorry didn't see there was a thread about this already... I did do a search before posting but obviously not searched hard enough :-[

Thanks for the recommend, that live disc seems appealing, I've heard good things about Annie Fischer.

That girl's performance is impressive :) but i looked on Amazon and she doesn't seem to have a cd though

I'll read back over this thread now. Thanks again.

No, she's very young. Also, I'm getting the feeling this piece was the peak of her performance at the competition.

I am sure you all know that the greatest Fantasia-- and indeed the greatest piano recording of anything ever is Arrau's Ascona concert

Which label is that one on? Can it be found?

The Arrau is on Fabula Classica and is 2cds.  I know it's available at Amazon and Arkiv Music (both in the $40 range).

The 2 CD set is here

The Fantasia, as I say, is just incredible. I don't know what sort of stimulant he had taken before the concert -- but whatever it was I want some now!

It also contains a great Appassionata and maybe my favourite Handel Variations. The Liszt B minor is good too -- though maybe not as good as his 1970 one on GPOC.

Alternatively you can get this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Piano-Recital-Asona-Claudio-Arrau/dp/B000025Y7P/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1249362555&sr=1-1

I see I said Lugano in the original post. I should have said Ascona -- I'll change it.

Thank you for the comments! I ordered it from Crotchet for £12.

Once you have heard Vladimir Horowitz's version, 1965 return to the stage concert, no other version can ever satisfy you anymore.
