Foobar2000 anyone?

I noticed it sounds better than Winamp, has more functionality etc. However, I do not have any idea how to make it look "good". The default interface is OK but I saw people having great layouts with album covers etc. I am aware of the ColumnsUI and PanelsUI thing, however if I install those the volume control is gone and it still does not look as pretty as it could. Is there any place on the net where I can find ready made "skins" just like for Winamp?

That was the reason I didn't stick with Foobar - I couldn't find a way to make it as practical as Winamp in its tiny "bar" form, and all the suggested aesthetic improvements still looked prefabricated.

Although the Foobar2000 team themselves claim that it does NOT sound better than other players, I still notice a significant improvement to the point of uninstalling Winamp :) I made my Foobar look a little better by changing colours but it still looks rather laughable compared to some of the screenshots that I saw. So I am wondering - do I need to be a rocket scientist to change the UI or is there some other way? I have no idea about writing codes and all, I just want to choose something like a "skin" and still keep the volume control which is gone with the ColumnsUI or so it seems... Any help from fellow Foobar users would be highly appreciated - I tried the Foobar forums but what they write there sounds too much like "rocket science" to me :)

I think it looks great as is: clean and functional, with no dancing frogs or spinning hubcaps.

Much better! :D Winamp is helpless before the awesome power of Foobar, which can sound better than anything for no goddam reason at all!

That's what I like about it too.  I can't help the OP with dressing it up because I like my Columns UI and album art the way they came out of the box.  Screen grab of my config attached.

Hi RussellG,

I could live with the default ColumnsUI but how can you manage without having the volume control?  :o Apart from that - how about making it look black and glossy... I do not want to overdress it, just make it look less "primordial" :) I can change the colours even in the default UI but have no idea how to adjust the texture etc. Perhaps this is a good thread for showing off your Foobar2000 and also providing help in such issues - as mentioned before, I tried Foobar forums but could not understand much :)

Hi Ciel_Rouge,

I run Foobar on a dedicated audio PC that outputs to a D/A Converter, which from there goes to a pre-amplifier, where I control volume.  I leave Foobar's volume slider in Preferences set to maximum and also have ReplayGain turned off.

Sorry, I can't help you with changing colours or textures - I like my desktop background black and my apps white  :)

Ciel_Rouge

Sure, I actually kind of suspected that you control volume via hardware and not software :) Perhaps someone can help me with the "making it look less primordial" issue. Still, I think we have created a nice thread for exchanging views and ideas about Foobar and its features and showing off the personalised UIs that you might have created. I am relatively new to fb2k, I installed it 2 days ago. I wonder if there are any plugins that might be of use to us, classical listeners.

I've made a complete 180 since this post - I became tired of Winamp's CUE support dying with every update, and its generally bloated nature. I figure, I don't need a permenent on-screen display anyway.

Anyway, I have a question: does anyone know an addon that makes the covers of the albums you have queued display as collage (or perhaps a slideshow, but this is less ideal)? Google has not been helpful on the matter.

Try Foobar2000 forums for this one. Since installing in April, I have kept it but used rarely due to high level of knowledge and IT skill required for making it pretty and more functional.

Ciel Rouge, I realize it has been several months since you posted this and may have already figured out how to add the volume control, but in case you haven't (or if someone else wants to know) this is how you do it:  Right-click the menu bar, select Toolbars, and check Volume.  Very simple, but I didn't figure out how to do this until yesterday.  :)

That's a good one.
