Well.  What can I say?
FIRE.

A couple of months ago FIRE ravaged my wee Glasgow flat and left me out on a limb.  I lost
many things, the most significant being two things:
1. Much of my CD and most of my MP3 collections.
2. I even lost some Rangstrom which was sent to me by Andrei without even having heard it.

Yep, fire takes it all with it, furnishings, artifacts, books, computer systems and music
systems.  And peace of mind.

Fire is the bastard of nature.  I don't really care much for furnishings, etc, these can
all be (and are now) replaced through insurance, etc.  What is irreplacable is all that
music I lost, so with a few fragments and burnt edges I must start the whole bloody thing
off again.

As a result, I've relocated in the past two months to Liverpool to be closer to my kids,
and have just this morning got a computer up and running, so my first point of reference is
good old GMG.  A couple of times on public machines I've came in to GMG, but didn't sign in
as until I got a computer set up it would have been impossible and unfair on others to
sustain regular contact.   :-[

Thanks to Andrei, Colin, Karl and Jeffrey who have sent me wee emails here and there to encourage
my return.  Well, I have returned now!

Anyone know a good "Fire" symphony?   :-\

Eek, this is terrible! As much as we idealise inner-harmony and the ability to live without excessive possessions, they do become very important to us. I hope that things are a little better for you now?

Haydn's "Fire" symphony (No.59) is hardly as dramatic as the title would imply, but Haydn should lift anybodies spirits...
Peanut butter, flour and sugar do not make cookies. They make FIRE.

I know this doesn't need saying, but I'll say it, anyway: that's terrible! Very sorry to hear about it, John. You were unharmed (physically), I hope.

What you need now is some Water Music, my friend. :)

Good lord, John, what a catastrophe! :o  You have my extreme sympathy. And on that topic, the thought of fire has terrorized me for years, since I live out in the country, and there wouldn't be a prayer of saving anything. And since I am paranoid about it, I have considered that even my insurance would be of little value, since even with ready cash in hand, many (most!) of my CD's and books are irreplaceable due to their rarity. Which is assuming that me, the wife and our dogs got out of the place to start with  :-\

Good to see you back, and here's a recommendation for you: Haydn - Symphony #59 in A major "Fire".... :)

Welcome back!

As FIRE means FOUR (4) in Norwegian, I can think of many.....

Terrible news, John. I haven't been very active here these last few months, but I did notice your absence when I was.

First of all, sorry to hear about your loss.

Secondly, to answer your question: Arnie Bax's Spring Fire Symphony comes to mind.

Sorry to hear of your terrible loss.

Seconded...

Are you a member of the Yahoo Group OperaShare?  That may be a great place to begin rebuilding.

Answer: Wagner's Magic Fire Music.

Horrible story, and only we in this forum might be able to know what a loss it is. But good to see you back, here.

A Resurrection Symphony might be another good idea - but no, I'm not thinking of Gustav's, but rather of Edmund's - his Ninth.  0:)
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Hi John - just coming into this thread and was shocked to hear your news - really sad & tragic, but glad that you are intact!  :-\

Fires & tornadoes are the major 'destroyers' of home around my area - just a story in our local newspaper today about some of the past tornadoes that had hit Piedmont NC in recent years w/ pics of utterly destroyed houses - just devastating destruction.  Probably the most valuable contents in our house is the art that we've collected in nearly 40 yrs - most just non-replaceable and full of memories - well, wish you the best - Dave

Thanks all.
Point of fact:  The fire was was a result of electrical sparkings caused by overloading a multi-plug adapter for my music player, computer, external cd, speakers, CD system, and a few other things crammed in there.  I've learned my lesson.  Take care when overplugging all your lovely gear.
Thankfully I was out (buying a couple of Bach CD's would you believe) when the fire took place, and I returned to find fire engines and people amassed on the road.  I live alone so no-one was hurt.

I forgot - the Symphony (Poem rather) of Fire is Scriabin's Prometheus, of course.

Yeah, that's what came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

John, I like everyone else here am shocked and terribly sorry to hear about the fire, and all of your lost belongings too.  :-[

So happy to hear that you are OK.  We've missed you here on GMG, and obviously know why you have been absent.

Florestan

John, I'm terribly sorry for what happened and do hope that you'll overcome this misfortune. The most important thing now is that you are safe and sound and back with us!

I shall send you that Rangstrom disc again (I need your new postal address). Also, I too would be glad to help with other music you might need. Please PM me.

John, what a relief to know you're all right and back with us!

[And now I'm off for a walk around the flat to check for overplugged adapters... :o]

John,

I am horrified to hear your news :( Fire is indeed a terrible thing! I too live alone in a flat(apartment-for non-Brits :)) in Perth and my most precious possessions are my cat, my cd collection and my books. The thought of losing these is too horrendous to contemplate.
At least you are unscathed but the loss of your music is just utterly dreadful!

A friend of mine has been trying to persuade me to digitize all my music. The advantage of that, I suppose, is that one could grab an external hard drive or two(or three....!) and run in the event of fire....but it would take forever to actually do that and one would need to be there when the fire started!

A few years ago I too had a fire. I fell asleep in my sitting room with an old electric blanket heating up my bed. I was woken by my cat wailing as the flat filled with smoke-the bed was on fire! Although my bedroom was badly damaged by smoke the firemen threw the burning mattress out of the bedroom window before anything else caught fire! I have never used an electric blanket since then!!

As others have said, if there is any music at all that I can make available to you from my collection please do not hesitate to ask. I know that we share similar tastes so anything you want, whether Pettersson or anything else, please ask :)

Best Wishes,

Colin.

Yikes! John, that sucks. Thank God you're all right!

What if you keep backup hard drives in a friend's house? They don't take up much space anyway, and hard drives aren't that expensive.
Orgullosamente diletante.
