Quite possibly the best film I've ever seen, although I haven't seen Infernal Affairs...

Discuss.

mahlertitan

you've got to see Infernal affairs trilogy first.
A friend of mine, who has seen both versions said that the "departed" is much inferior to that of Infernal Affairs.

sidoze

Not as good as Satantango  :P

Michel

I was particularly pleased with myself in recognising the Roy Buchanan guitar playing at the close of the film...

While I'm not sure I'd say "best film I've ever seen" I thought it was superb, and it made me very happy that it got Scorsese his first Academy Award.  IMHO one of the best cat-and-mouse thrillers of recent years, and the cast seemed to be having a great time.  It's filled with some virtuoso filmmaking, not to mention virtuoso editing from Thelma Schoonmaker, and is definitely one of Scorsese's best (which is saying something).

One of the few films I saw last year that I look forward to revisiting, for a more careful look.  (I haven't seen Internal Affairs yet.)

Yes, what I may have said is a hyperbole, but a film that incites such exclamations is a good one indeed!

Films like this are like great books - so immersive you live and breath it for days afterwards and can't think of much else.

The Departed isn't even Scorsese's best film, though it is very good.  Could have been more violent.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

I also believe Dicaprio is a modern day Al Pacino and is a legend already. Amazing actor who I know Scorsese loves.

For me, Todd, this films trumps my old Scorsese favourite: Casino.

Casino?  No, no, no.  Goodfellas or Raging Bull.

Not for me.  I was very disappointed with The Departed, although it did pick up some from the mid-point.  Particularly unbelieveable was Martin Sheen's second in command - don't remember his name.

And Cybill Shepherd looked so hot.....

Don

I forgot to mention the "girlfriend".  What was she all about?  Sleeps with clients, is engaged to one guy while screwing the other guy.  Garbage in - garbage out.

Michel

Don, I have not a bad thing to say about that women mentioned. She was a sexy mofo.

I don't question her sexual appeal.  I question her motivations; frankly, I found her mode of operation totally unrealistic.

I just couldn't concentrate when she was on screen...  ;) :)

A good film, yes, but the ending was just a little too much and over-the-top for me.

My favorite film by Scorsese is Mean Streets.  Easily one of the greatest films ever made.
