Well, I decided to visit MDT this afternoon and look for some CDs on sale and/or discs on my 'wish list'; so placed a couple of orders:

Brahms, Johannes - Piano Trios et al w/ Gould Trio on Quartz; 3-CD set @ a great price; already own Beaux Arts on two discs.

Farrenc, Louise - Piano Trio & Sextet w/ Linos Ensemble on CPO.

Fitzwilliam Virginal Book w/ Martin Souter; 2-CDs - works of Byrd, Bull, Farnaby, Philips, & Sweelinck.

Fuchs, Robert - Piano Trios w/ Gould Trio on Quartz; just have a Clarinet Quintet & Piano Concerto by him.

Mozart, WA - Serenades & Divertimenti w/ Vegh; 10-CD set @ a steal!

Thuille, Ludwig - Sextet & Trio w/ Conchord on Quartz.

From Hyperion's "Someone, please buy me" sale:

Delivered from the UK to Canada in 6 days--once again Hyperion impress.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."
-- Aaron Copland, The Pleasures of Music

The Decca Ansermet SRO Beethoven cycle arrived today. I'm more excited about this set than about the four other Beethoven setss waiting for their turn.

For my purposes, the Newbury Comics on-line catalogue is better stocked than the brick-&-mortar shops:

Why not..... ;)

Harry, I got a copy of that Michael Daugherty CD signed by the composer! :) Wonderful music, immensely approachable and very enjoyable. It's not profound but it is nothing to sneeze at either!

Thanks Brian, for the thumbs up, from the excerpts I heard it made a good impression on me.

Bamberger Symphoniker, Hans Stadlmair
*** Exklusiv bei jpc

Label: Tudor , DDD, 1998-2004
Bestellnummer: 9789993

Roughly translated: Stadlmaier plays with flair, and as it seems the right tempi, he has a  fine ear for the inner details, and brings this into effect, in a very well balanced, multi layered and exciting recording. The Bamberger SO is a Orchestra that has its own unique sound, and engage themselves in competent and temperamental interpretations. Stadlmaier finds the exact middle between what the composition has to say, and a grand musical picture. Excellently played, in a dark Schumann style, and a temporary end of Symphonic Romanticism.

Are you trying to pull a Karl on us, Harry? ;) :D

If I would know what a Karl is, I could answer that question, ;D but I ordered  on JPC the Symphonies by Raff. As yet no image available.

Edit, o, now I know, the German, right?

Oh. Nice. That "119" -- which I now I realise is symphonies 1-11 contained in 9 CDs -- threw me off initially.

Today In the post from JPC: Aho, Bernstein, and the Rach (thanks to George for pointing out that this is a cheap way to acquire Wild's Concertos and Rodriguez's solo work along with some tasty historical performances):

Does anyone else have this Brilliant Rachmaninoff box? Mine came sealed but there was no booklet inside. I wasn't expecting much but did expect a list of CD content and tracks. Do I have a defective set or did Brilliant actually not include a booklet?

Sarge

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

This is also a pricey box by BC's standard.  It is definitely a bummer not having liner notes ...

Liner notes is one thing. Not knowing what is on the discs (or it that on the separate disc envelopes Sarge?) quite another....
