Welcome to Harry's world, Karl  :)

Sarge
Harry's covers are much nicer though... :D
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

He doesn't post the covers as much (probably for that reason), but Harry's a Naxos-o-phage whose napkin-rings I am unworthy to polish ; )

Not at all. "...Even more somber, impressing through immense clarity and understatement, are the Backhaus readings, the later stereo cycle of which is a much cherished favorite of mine."

I love, love, love Backhaus in Beethoven. I crossed out "interpretation" because they don't seem to be interpretations but manifestations of just the music. Very 'simple'... and out of that comes sheer greatness.

I see. OK then we're on the same page as to what we like about these recordings.

But every performance necessarily is an interpretation. Even if it is one that you find particularly unobtrusive.

The Septuor is a great piece, Que!

Maybe great...but is it a work of genius?  ;)

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

It is! :) Saint-Saens' chamber music has an uncanny originality about it.

But I have to confess I posted in the wrong thead  :o :-\ - I was actually listening to it! :D
Which is even better than buying, I suppose... 8)

Well, I've not appeared in these pages for a while, but just a small purchase from the Amazon Marketplace today - Mackerras' last Beethoven set (multiple recommendations including one from Gurn); Gernsheim - really have been enjoying his chamber works (purchased this one after hearing the Quintets for piano); Martinu - uniformly recommended here (and elsewhere!); and Tuma - love this conductor & group but first disc of  this late Baroque composer!  :D

Beethoven, LV - Symphonies w/ Mackerras & Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Gernsheim, Friedrich - Piano Quartets w/ Diogenes Quartet & Andreas Kirpal

Martinu, Bohuslav - String Quartets w/ Panocha Quartet

Tuma, Frantisek - Partitas et al w/ Alessandrini & Concerto Italiano

Tuma, Frantisek
(spoken in a terrible Austrian accent) It's not a Tuma!

A couple of things have landed for me:

I just have to tear myself away from the Martinu-Tippett-late Stravinsky axis that's been on my brain the last few days.

Dave, I have listened to nothing else for the past three days - going through the whole cycle. The Ninth is due up today! Individual movements (4.ii, 6.v) can be disappointing, but all in all it has been a hugely rewarding listening experience. Get yourself especially excited for 1, 2, 7, 8, and a stupendous rendition of 5!

karlhenning

Landed yesterday:

Roussel – Complete Symphonies

Schuman – Complete The Symphonies
[Symphonies nos. 1 & 2 remain withdrawn from the public]

And landed today:

Martinů – Field Mass/Double Concerto/Les Freques de Piero della Francesca [cond. by Mackerras]

A lot of enjoyable listening ahead of me!

DavidRoss

Landed today:

Thanks, jpc.  Think I'll space out the listening, lest I grow sick of 'em all too soon!

Broke down and began ordering online.  Right now, it's only recordings needed to complete series I have in part.  For instance,  today's purchase

This is, somehow, the only one in this series I don't have.

Brian - well, I have the other Mackerras symphony set, so this one will be a nice addition; glad that you are enjoying, as has others!  Dave  :D
