Universal seem to be dumping their remaining stock of Originals, and I guess that those who don't turn up as part of larger boxes will never be seen again (unless sold to Brilliant); so I bought these:

Pictures not showing for the first three.

Then I guess all is now well and the problem may have been that the linked source was temporarily down.

There are few pianists whose recordings eagerly await but Sudbin is one of them. Somehow I missed this when it came out and would be interested in what you think of it. How would the 4th stack up against my two favourites - Gilels/Ludwig and Moravec/Turnovsky.

...and yes, $70 does seem excessive so I'm am sure I can get it a lot cheaper elsewhere.

I am a newbie & haven't owned other versions so I'm probably not the best person to ask right now! It's been a while since I last listened to this, so I need to hear it more and try to find your favorite versions so I can compare.

I got my copy from Sudbin's official website, it's still available there for regular price plus shipping, although the Amazon price has gone down to earth since my original post.

No, Tamsin, you're wrong. Your status is "full member". Therefore, you're entitled to express all the sweeping generalizations that you want. Just exactly as the older members do.  ;D

Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5 in E-flat Major
Subdbin, Vanska
BIS SACD

I anticipate anything Vanska (what Beethoven!) and anything Sudbin (what Scarlatti! what Scriabin! what Medtner!) greatly... but the several times I've listened to this, I've just not found it extraordinary in any way.  :(

Very good, but given my expectations greatly disappointing.

I have only listened twice, but my impression of it on the first listen was similar to my impression of Vanska's Beethoven: perfect, every note in exactly the right place and phrased exactly the right way, to the point of lacking some kind of extra spirit. My second listen, however, was not susceptible to those doubts and was very greatly enjoyed. So my jury is out.

Hey Tonito, I bought my copy 2nd-hand from Amazon as the recording is OOP now - there are still a few copies going cheap I think, if you are interested :)

Arrived today;

In 1790, just before heading to London the first time, Haydn composed these 3 trios for Flauto Traverso, Cello & Fortepiano (Hob XV:15-17). Lots of versions of these around, simply because a> they are so good! and b> despite being part of the piano trios (Hob 15) they are unique in all Haydn's output as his only contribution to the very popular flute and piano repertoire. Despite having several very nice versions, when I saw this Winter & Winter 'La Gaia Scienza' disk I couldn't resist. Their playing and the recording quality in the Schubert set sold me when it came to Haydn!   :)  In addition, as Mandryka and I were briefly discussing in the 'Haydn Symphonies' thread, there is a contemporaneous arrangement of Symphony 94 in the highly popular quartet for flute, violin, cello and fortepiano combination. Not done by Haydn, although he must certainly have known about it, but by another composer who was probably a better arranger than composer, named Ludwig Lachnith, in 1793.

After talking with Mandryka I was delighted to know that I would be getting it soon, and now I have. Probably spin it tomorrow for a first listen. :)

Very interesting early Classical composer (all the symphonies are in the 3 movement sinfonia format).

It's a beautiful CD in the usual style of La Gaia Scienza: lively, with nice dynamic contrasts, etc.

BTW, did you buy this CD in the past, Gurn?

[asin]B00009NOX3[/asin]

It includes Salomon's chamber arrangements (for a sextet of instruments, IIRC: string quartet, fortepiano & flute) for three London symphonies, among them the "Surprise". Unfortunately Florilegium recorded this only volume of those arrangements.

The new erato

I bought the Gaia Scienza's Schubert trios in June to supplement my Beaux-Arts', and very good they are.

Just a small order from prestoclassical:

FAURE La bonne chanson op. 61, Piano Quartet op. 15. Karine Deshayes. Zig Zag Territoires

This disc got an Outstanding classification in the latest issue of International Record Review, and as I love Zig Zags production values, and in addition don't have La bonne chanson in the Quintet version, how could I resist (Faure is a particular obsession of mine)?

And as I'm equally obsessed with Schutz, and this disc was "Disc of the Month" in the issue of Diapason that I bought while on vacation in France; how could I resist adding it to the order?

HEINRICH SCHÜTZ

1. Musicalische Exequien, SWV 279
2. Herr nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahen, SWV 432
3. Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben, SWV 464
4. Herr nun lässest du deinen Diener in Friede fahen, SWV 433
5. Das ist je gewißlich wahr, SWV 277
6. Wir glauben all an einen Gott (S. SCHEIDT)

The Agricola disc on Ricercar showed the outstanding production values on recent Ricercar releases and as Diapason priced this issue highly on account of the sound as well as artistic content, I look forward to receiving this.

Toñito,
No, unfortunately I didn't, but only because I never happened across it. I really do like Floregium's efforts that I have so far (their Biber is especially nice). The chamber arrangements of symphonies can be surprisingly satisfactory, I've discovered. The Hummel arrangements of Mozart's symphonies for quartet being a fine example. :)

These arrangements are very well done, too. This disc is still widely available, so nothing has been lost. There are two formats: SACD (hybrid) and redbook CD, with a marginal difference of price.

Just 17 euro's on JPC a bargain me thinks. Somehow missed this.
