Yup, true enough on both counts; I DO have the original DHM releases, and I DO prefer the old timey covers. :)  Geo, I didn't know there was a price jump on that; dadgum thing was pricey enough to start with... >:(

I was never able to find disk 5 in the original cover though; I've never even seen it. Is that entire set remastered then? :)

There will be quite some Sony DHM boxes be released in January 2012, among them Bruno Weill's Haydn symphonies, lots of stuff from Kuijken, Bijlsma, Lamon, all budget boxes, keep you informed as soon as I know more. :)

I was made aware of this disc by a conversation between madaboutmahler and Jens. Don Quixote is the main attraction, of course, but of particular interest to me is Myron Bloom's Horn Concerto.

Yes: "96kHz/24bit Remastering using JVC K2 Technology." You know, one of those Japanese things.

Without the nice paintings of Georgian London, I don't think the sound improvement alone will be enough to make me switch. :D

Thanks for that info, Harry. DHM is my favorite label. In fact, Sony now controls virtually all of the non-indies that I prefer, such as Seon and Vivarte along with DHM. If they can bring themselves to just make a nice Classical Era release without mixing in a bunch of Baroque stuff I would likely hop on a nice box set. Some of that stuff is really, really hard to get!   :)

Is this recording just a redbook CD?

Not familiar with the term.  If you're asking if it's a re-issue, I don't think it is.
Savall's reissues are given the rubric of Alia Vox Heritage.

Hi Jeffrey - the original CD IEEE standards were published in a booklet w/ a red color cover (likely because the laser used on standard CDs is a red one vs. e.g. Blu-ray) - believe that Stuart was simply asking whether this disc is a standard CD or a SACD?  Dave :)

Arrived today :) :

Excellent recording, Conor. Bohm is one of my favorite Brucknerians. 8) This is the incarnation I own (there have been several) of that recording:

Nice! I bought Bohm's Bruckner 7th and 8th last week too - I'm looking forward to hearing his Romantic Symphony and plan to put it on next! :)

Had ordered this of an amazon seller a while ago, but it never came, so I was refunded and brought something else instead.... but yesterday, after listening to Lady Godiva again on youtube, I decided to buy the cd again, hoping this time it will actually arrive! Through the listening thread, you can probably see how I thought Lady Godiva was absolutely beautiful, so I am really excited about hearing more of Novak's work. Shame there is so little recorded.....

He wasn't particularly prolific, mind. I'm a fan of Novák too - definitely the first place to look after, say, Josef Suk.

Ah, I see. However, I am rather surprised that even labels such as Naxos have not recorded any of his work. Normally a good resource for less known composers. I might write to them suggesting they record some of his works. Someone has to promote him! ;)

3LP, total price 2 Euros:

- Debussy: Nocturnes, Iberia / Paray stereo. Haven´t seen it before here; the original Mercury recording is on an Eterna license (GDR !). The Nocturnes received a grudging review in Gramophone for being too coarse, but it will be nice to hear this original and lively conductor in that repertoire.
- Mahler: 12 Songs / Ludwig, Moore / originally issued by EMI, this is a Record Society Australia pressing. Didn´t have this classic issue, but I´m not sure yet if I like it so much.
- Liszt: Les Preludes, Smetana: Vltava, Mozart: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Wagner: Meistersinger Vorspiel / Furtwängler. Not so commonly seen repertoire for this conductor, did have some of it already though.

3LP, 3 Euros:
Busoni: Doktor Faust /Leitner. Actually had the CDs, but try to keep an LP archive as well of the best works/recordings, provided I can get them cheaply.

EDIT: Having heard more of these, I found the Busoni and Debussy/Paray to be good, whereas the Furtwängler and Mahler/Ludwig were less to my taste, the Furtwängler also suffering from an unpleasantly muddy sound and not particularly interesting phrasings in this case.

They're currently sitting on a couple of Marco Polo recordings - I believe those were a large part in the composer's re-discovery. They do really need a reissue - so much of that catalogue does :(

Dave,  Thanks for the clarification.  I guess I assumed redbook is such a well-known term and it is not ...    ;)
