I'd have to say, I've been very restrained recently, however this arrived in the post today...

I sampled the new Gaillard last week, and frankly it did make less of an impression on me then her earlier take on Ambrosie: slower, more laboured, yet less articulated.

I'll report my impressions after I've given it a proper listen. But keep in mind, I found samples of her earlier recording timid and "safe" — the range of colors and more liberal use of ornaments in samples of the new set is what convinced me to give it a try.

Thanks for that.  I am a total convert to SACD done well.  Some recordings are transformed utterly when heard in SACD (while others appear indistinguishable.)

The Amazon reviews make a convincing case for the Kwetzinsky too so I've ordered that one (to start with.)

What's nice about their multi-channel approach is that they really put you at the heart of the action. It's not "stereo done by other means" (via the excuse of sitting in an imaginary concert hall), but really making the most of the fact that you have a three-dimensional musical space to fill. The interplay between the members of a string quartet, for example, becomes completely different than one is used to (in their first recordings most radically so; since then a little toned down) but offers a new, perfectly intriguing way of listening. With solo piano, obviously, things are not quite as unconventional.

Arrived today--an order from Arkivmusic that took so long to get to me I was beginning to think it was lost in the mail (shipped 12/6), and the one final item from another order that took a little longer than usual to get here, but not as badly--the Christmas rush, I'm assuming, is to blame.
The not so delayed recording:

And the truly delayed items: Angela Hewitt not playing Bach, and something to listen to on Sunday.

Just ordered off Hyperion's Please Buy Me page.

Corydon Singers doing Chichester Psalms, some early motets by Copland, and Barbers Agnus Dei (ie, the Adagio in choral form)

Have nothing by Bantock up to now.  The Pagan Symphony performed by Handley/Royal Phil.

Boccherini Flute Quintets, performed by Auser Musici

Genz/Vignoles--the piano versions of Songs of a Wayfarer, Kindertotenlieder, Ruckert Lieder, and some early songs written directly for piano and voice, to give a comparison to my recordings by Christian Gerharer.

Indeed. I've got that set, and the quartet recordings alone in the big box. Annoyingly, Hyperion didn't include the Op. 117 solo piano recordings in the box, so I can't give the original set away. Oh well.

Well....I lied.  I saw that three copies of Brautigam's Haydn keyboard concertos disc sold out and decided to jump on the one left before the price skyrocketed.  While I was at it, a two discs for $2 supplement of the keyboard concertos on harpsichord seemed appropriate.  So, there we have it, the real last order of the year.

well, I have to say I never knew of the existance of that recording... it's gone onto my wish list, and I dare say I'll be able to squeeze it in to my listening schedule in the New Year...  8)

my latest purchase:

I have had it on price watch for a very long time, and a very reasonably priced copy came up... I'm not ready for it yet, but the offer was simply too good to refuse...

They just told me the Medtner is temporarily out of stock...  :(

...so I decided to replace it with these two beauties:

And yet the package has just arrived... in its original configuration. Living in Romania is so much fun! :D

Hah!

I hate them for another reason though: they've made me want the other two boxes as well.  ;D

I was unaware of this set until yesterday, myself.  Reading through the entire Haydn's Haus thread is a monumental undertaking, but it has its benefits!
