Arrived today, Haydn and Monn cello concertos performed by Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Freiburger Barockorchester.

Incidentally, Sarge . . . do you know the Schoenberg Cello Concerto after Monn?

I do, Karl. I have Yo-Yo-Ma's performance with the Boston Symphony conducted by Ozawa. It'll be interesting to compare it with the original, now that I have it.

Had another land today that I haven't previously posted...

[asin]B000000B1R[/asin]

...after several weeks of sampling and reading some reviews I made this my first Requiem recording, have only heard the Credo & Lacrymosa, very anxious for my first full listen, from already enjoying some other of Schnittke's works with voices, 2nd & 4th symphonies, and his Choir Concerto I have little doubts about feeling equally impressed with the Requiem.

Good luck to you, Greg. I hope you have a nice bottle of Vodka around because that's the only way I could deal with Schnittke. :D

Ironically, Vodka is my choice of liquor.   ;)

Schnittke you need Vodka for, but the Kaddish Symphony you can take sober? You're a sick puppy.  ;)

The Kaddish Symphony isn't that bad.

. .  .  It's just that it isn't that good, either.

Besides,  with the Kaddish Symphony,  you would drink some good schnapps.  Or at least some Mogen David wine....

(posting this while sipping on a Lowland single malt I bought on experimental impulse--Auchentoshan.  Not great, but certainly not an impulse buy to be regretted.

Thread duty:  purchased the Hogwood/AAM recording of Haydn's Orfeo ed Euridice (with Bartoli and D'arcangelo) from an Amazon MP vendor this morning for $12 plus shipping.  I've already received an email claiming it's been shipped.  Well, some Amazon vendors really are that quick....

Quick warning here: I don't think I'm the only person to think that the recording of the piano concerto on that disc is absolutely dire. Heavy-handed string playing and a totally unsympathetic soloist make it a performance to forget. The Requiem is much better, fortunately.

That's actually very close to what I've read from other reviews of this disc, Edward. But I did buy this mainly for the Requiem:)

I'm a great fan of this trio, they are nearly always great, and as I have no complete of these works in modern sound (I have DGs older complete with Kempff, Forunier etc) as well as countless versions of the Ghost and the Archduke) this was a good time to strike for a complete set in modern sound.
