Decided to go with Vinikour over Belder, it's more expensive and without the Pièces de clavecin en concerts, but I already have three recordings of those works that I find suitable. But I really connect to Vinikour's playing, I enjoy his Goldberg disc and have downloaded (legally of course) tracks from his recital disc featuring some Rameau works and find them highly-spirited, uniquely personal interpretations. I think it will be a nice contrast to my copies of Pinnock on harpsichord (very muscular) and Hewitt on piano (delicate, Rameau really sings with Hewitt).

Arrived this morning: another Karajan Dvorak Eighth, this one recommended by Fafner ("And the Dvorak 8 that he did with the Vienna Philharmonic for Decca in the 60's is one for the ages")

Oh dear, now you are making me nervous.  I hope it doesn't disappoint (or if it does, in a spectacular way).   :D

Of course it doesn't disappoint, it's conducted by Karajan!! ;)

symphonies by Antonio Cartellieri (a 10/10 rave from the Hurwitzer: "This disc is a real find for anyone interested in the Viennese classical style")

Any recommendation by Hurwitzer is a serious discouragement in my book! ;D

Anyway, bargains purchased yesterday:

The Stern/Beyer had been on the wish list for a long time.
The Vilsmayr/ Letzbor is a gamble - Vilsmayr was a student of Heinz Ignaz von Biber and it's on ARCANA - so why not give a go?! :D

I much prefer the Dvorak 8th with Constantin Silvestri and the LPO.  Anyone else have that one?

In his [I shudder to have to say this] defense, he's much more often right with raves than he is wrong with dumps.

Sure, honestly there is some stuff he knows about, but a wise reviewer knows his blinds spots and stays away from them. :)

Very damaging for his credibility, all those clueless rants.. ::)

After recently spending some time with Chailly's Beethoven, and already liking his Mahler, Bruckner, & Brahms, I decided that I needed to try his Stravinsky:

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

I have it on LP, has it ever made to CD? It's quite fast and shiny brilliant, bit relentless for my taste. Kind of supports the old moniker for British orchestras - 'brass band with strings attached'.

I also acquired that recently and am looking forward to exploring it.

It was released on an EMI Toshiba set with the 7th and 9th on a 2 disc set in Japan, and then on the big 10 disc set put out by Disky about 10 years ago.  I love the relentlessness of it; it reminds of Janacek and the Dvorak 8th is the most "brassy" IMO.

Nice lot, especially the Biber, such an eerily beautiful quality.

Thumbs up on the Haydn (you do know there are two more--or more precisely, one and a half more--twofers in that Haydn series?),  Byrd and Marais.

There's also one with three of the "middle" symphonies,  coupled with the violin concertos performed by Wallfisch,  but Kuijken is present only on the symphonies.

The painting, IIRC, is Rembrandt's Jeremiah.
