The new erato

Oops Bartoli, that is a acquired taste, she drives me nuts in 10 seconds, tops! ;D
She used to da that with me as well (at least occasionally), but with the last album (Mission) she sings absolutely magnificently, and very relaxed. One of my discs of the year for sure.

Hmm well as a person she is adorable, maybe I should dip my ears a little into this CD you mention.

This is a good one. Not my favorite, but it's among my preferred versions.

Re:  Verdi Requiem - this will be a 'full first listen' to this masterpiece.  I've only heard bits of Verdi's Requiem previously.  :)

Neal - Have you only now just dipped your toes in Haydn's string quartets?  :o  Well....glad you are now!  :)

It really is fine, Harry.  I have listened to it twice in the past month, and I think you would find much to admire in her singing  :)

Yes and No. No, because I put together a 'custom set' earlier this year by picking various bits from different groups. I later got the Angeles set for $50, so I now have two versions of almost all the quartets. That said, I still have not listened to them all, so am still dipping my toes into some of them.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

The Friscay Verdi Reqiem is a classic. A tremendous and dynamic performance. One of my collection.

Haven't heard this, but the Symphony 1 from the same forces is a solid disc.

I thought $4 was a good price considering it's OOP.

Great set!

+1 definitely.  I am not a Honegger scholar, but if you really dig the man's symphonies, you might at some point enjoy the Serge Baudo cycle of these works (Czech Phil on Supraphon).  Even without collecting many recordings of the symphonies, the contrasts between Dutoit's and Baudo's interpretations was striking to me.

I prefer Baudo's set over Dutoit's. I think Dutoit smoothes the music's edges which is a no-no in Honegger. Perhaps in the 4th, Dutoit can get away with this kind of interpretation since this symphony is more 'pastoral' than his others. I wished Jarvi had done a cycle. His recording on Chandos is still one of my favorite Honegger CDs.

IIRC, it was a decent performance.  Andre Previn is among the very few native-born American conductors besides Bernstein that are well represented in my collection ...

A 'decent performance'? Okay, well what other Enigma Variations performances do you own?
