Don't discount the recommendations for Baudo, Abbado, etc., but go for Karajan too. It's only €12.50 new at Amazon IT. While I agree with DD and Octave that the Baudo is more idiomatic (and the ancient Désormière even more so) what Karajan does with the score (a Pelléas for Bayreuth? ;D) is ravishing orchestrally, unique interpretively and, I think, should be heard (especially by a fan of Karajan). Frederica von Stade is my favorite Melisande.

;D

But that's just the thing about the Karajan that bugs me. If I want to hear Wagner I'll listen to Wagner. :)

It isn't anything personal, mind you. I just have a heart for Debussy's desire to write something "not Wagner" for the theater and still be a success, back in a time when Wagner was everywhere.

Not that a Baudo/Karajan combined purchase would be a bad thing at all. The price is right!

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Thank you, Sarge. :)
Wow, is it so cheap? How great! Being a huge fan of Karajan, I will certainly get his recording of Pelléas et Mélisande at some point. I've found on youtube an excerpt from the 2nd act I'm listening to now.....

Whoops! I had to make one more round before the year ends. Here's hoping I can make it deep into 2013 without indulging again.  ???

From ArkivMusic a twofer for $4.99:

From Presto a twofer for $15.37:

From ImportCDs for $26.72:

EDIT: The list prices for these on Amazon USA are $8, $40.31, and [unavailable, $68 new on Marketplace], so I saved $70!

AWESOME!!!! Fantastic set. I hope you enjoyed as much as I have. The only negative thing I have to say is I didn't like the performances of string concerti with Yehudi Menuhin. I've never been fond of his violin playing and thought the recording was quite dated. Supplement with Tasmin Little/Mackerras. :)

Good to hear, Paul. (IIRC you advertised that one in the Mussorgsky thread, too)

@North Star, I got three of your Martinu records (GILGAMESH, OPENING OF WELLS, VIOLIN CONCERTOS w/Suk) just in the past month or so, and I just loved them.  I cannot imagine living without them now.  Martinu is a new passion of mine.  I also enjoyed this very much, which is out of print now (though I think one disc of it is in-print from....Apex?) but can perhaps still be had cheap:

[asin]B00000J7OS[/asin]
though I see the Amazon MP price is up to US$13+shipping now for used copies, maybe not quite a great deal; I understand there might be other, preferable performances of all these pieces.

Martinu will be someone I will be digging into more deeply next year, definitely.

Cheers!
Martinu is a relatively recent discovery for me, too - I got the Apex disc of Conlon in October (Double Concerto, Concerto for SQ & Orch. & 3 Ricercari) - brilliant disc. Yes, there are recordings on Supraphon on that material - no doubt those are splendid recordings, too. In fact, I'll spin that disc now.
Passion, indeed. It doesn't help (financially) that he was so prolific, either.

My final purchase of the year....for less than $7, and in this year where I went crazy with Haydn, it is fitting that I bought...Haydn!
