Renfield

I made a host of unexpected purchases over the time I've been away: largely classical-music related. However, I am promptly "going to be away some more", so to put it.

Hence, impressions and an actual list of highlights when I'm actually available (and forum-active) for them!

(Merry Christmas, too, just in case I'm not internet-available to post it on the day; or "happy holidays"; or what have you. ;))

[Did you notice how many hyphenated compound adjectives I've used in this post? Gah. :-X]

Picked this up on impulse today:

It's the 14th recording of this work that I own...and while I was listening on the drive home I realized it's the first time I've really heard the harp in the first movement...not just in the opening, but throughout.

Mann's Lotte in Weimar, for less than a dollar!

Good grief, I've got that in a Penguin paperback that I picked up in a book sale for 10p! I have yet to pluck up enough courage to read it though.

Arguably, the most emotional of performances and a first choice for many.

I mention that because I am listening to Abbado and the BPO's live recording on iPod, my current favourite.

Harry,

When you're at the top of the mountain, there's always someone wanting your throne.

Yes, but then he is welcome to it. It gets lonely at the top you know...... :)

It's still in the shrinkwrap. I stumbled upon it at lunch for $30/new.

So to begin with, the price was wow, it does not say anything about the recording....? ;D

Well you know, if you don't like it, send it to me, for a change...... ;D ;D ;D

Some cheap stuff:

I didn't have the complete Bacchus et Ariane:

I didn't have any Bacewicz at all (Maciek would be horrified!):

And this recording caught my interest a while back:

"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

I agree...
Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. -- Plato

What is Roussel like? I've often heard of him, but nothing by him (as is the case with too many composers to mention).

The mature Roussel is straight-up French neoclassicism: vigorous rhythms, slightly spicy harmonies, some twists of lyrical melody.

Tasso, what's on the Harnoncourt set? The cover advertises 4 Haydn masses and the Stabat Mater, but that's probably only 4 discs, not 6??

Well, my curiosity's piqued. Any particular recordings you recommend?
