I was bored this afternoon so went shopping. I live near charity shop city which can be handy for unearthing bargains. I think that's what I got today. It's a German issue by Decca of Beethoven's 5 piano concertos, as played by Friedrich Gulda and the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Horst Stein. I have no idea of their standing, but for the price of £5 it seemed too good a bargain to miss. Nice booklet too. Er... Does anyone speak German?  ;D I was going to go to KFC with that £5, but food can wait. There's Beethoven to be had!

The Sibelius looks quite tempting Corey. I have most by various artists, but not a complete cycle. I might have to look into that set.

The only set I've had until now is Maazel/Vienna. The Blomstedt set was at a bargain price so I went for it. I will post my impressions (as if anyone cares what I have to say about performances ;D) later on.

Do you happen to have recipes for CD cuisine...

Pancaked CDs for breakfast, CDburger for lunch, CD casserole for dinner... :)
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

Well, downloads really.

I got the following (except the filler on the Weigl) in three bundles from eclassical. It seems most of their files are 320kbps now, which is good enough for me even if I still prefer lossless.

Luigi Cherubini
String Quartets vol 1-3
Quartetto David

Domenico Scarlatti
Keyboard Sonatas
Yevgeny Sudbin

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"
SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg/Michael Gielen

Karl Weigl
Symphony No.5, "Apocalyptic"
Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra/Thomas Sanderling

I bought the same bundle as you (Mahler/Weigl). I have listened to the Mahler Second, but I have yet to hear Weigl's Fifth. You might beat me to it... If you do - please report back!

More!

This one is on my list as well...just waiting a bit to see if a Pearl set falls out of the sky and into my lap first.  The Faure set is outstanding.  You will enjoy it.

I was going to get the more expensive EMI release, but it wasn't available. A quick search pulled the Naxos release up, and it's almost half the price. I gather from the reviews that the sound is better on this one. Though, I blushingly admit that I don't know these pieces and the chance to hear them is higher priority than the quality of the recording. That they're performed by someone with a reputation like Casals is just icing on the cake.

Rickard, you'll love the Cherubini quartets. They are truly masterful, plumbing more depths than I had expected.
