My love for Richard Strauss grows even more with the following purchases:

  and this:

  and of course this:

I have always loved the operas of Richard Strauss.  In the field of opera he is the rightful successor to Wagner. The music he composes for the soprano role, his favorite voice has me coming back for more.  Daphne happens to be one of the shortest operas Strauss ever composed and from what I have read his wife's favorite opera.

I have the four last songs and Don Juan from other recordings but I was missing Also Sprach and Metamorphosen and Tod, its high time I had them in my collection.

Any objections from the GMG members to these purchases please make them here and now or forever hold your peace.

No objections to this one, with the German star Tenor Fritz Wunderlich, and Hilde Guden, two singers I respect.
I am curious about your findings Marvin. :)

As for the other two, you could not have made better choices, I have them both and love them very much.

I would get the DG 2 CD set of Karajan's Strauss instead. It's only a few bucks more and includes his Alpine Symphony.

Here's a link to amazon:

I found this one cheap:

Yes. You didn't get Karl Böhm's 1977 Die Frau ohne Schatten. Nilsson as the Dyer's Wife and Rysanek as the Empress? You love Strauss' soprano music. See if you can track down a copy of this one.

No problem. I'm always after the cheapest way to get CDs.  8)

Buy the Four Last Songs with Janowitz.  Listen to it.  Again.  And again.  You will not find a better performance than hers.

Trust me. Böhm's set on DG is live and has a few cuts, but makes up for those deficits (though neither is really a deficit, just an excuse for some folks to avoid the recording to their own detriment) with a fabulous cast and brilliant contributions from the pit.

No objections in principle, provided you already have this:

If not, buy it before you buy anything else.

For Karajan recordings, I would recommend you to get the Originals releases in your pictures rather than the DG 2fer (unless you absolutely need to have a photo of Karajan in his jet cockpit...) since it doesn't have Tod und Verklärung or Metamorphosen but the Alpensinfonie which is a sonically horribly screwed up recording. Better to get the Sony video with a live performance of the Alpensinfonie for that.

Harry

And another installment of the music of Rontgen. :)

I've been interested in this for a long time.  It may become my first R. Strauss purchase.

I actually only have part of it, the GRotC release with "Ein Heldenleben", etc.

Maybe I should pick up the rest, but I so love my Karajan Strauss recordings! I think I have all of them.:D

Edit: Apart from the operas, a couple of which I am missing...
