Sarge put the Ashkenazy box in your shopping cart now! That's an order.   $:)

I own 75% of that set or so and it's all wonderful. Great sound and performance!

Yeah, I know I should. I recall telling you I would...what, a year ago? To quote Dave: it will happen. In the meantime I'm still trying to download Drasko's file and can't. The download button won't come up  >:(

Yes, I know. But the words won't appear. The box they're normally in looks like it's on an acid trip...and it won't come down  ;D

Shall I download it and upload it again to Rapidshare, Sarge?

Give me a minute. I'll try once more at mediafire.

Didn't we have this problem before with you and mediafire?

Yeah, some days it just doesn't like me. I turned off my popup blocker but that didn't help either. So, Johan, if it isn't too much bother, I would appreciate an upload to Rapidshare.

This is the definitive complete set of the Polonaises IMO. Ashkenazy is both virtuosic and musical and he brings a real sense of elan to the Op 44 and Op 53. However, he really brings out the lesser known polonaises as well. This, like his Waltzes and his Etudes, is a must have if you like Chopin.
Cheers

Another ringing endorsement. Thank you.

Got it, heard it, and woke Mrs. Rock, who chewed me out for playing it so loud. I blamed Milos and Johan. Now you guys are in the dog house too  ;D

Sarge

P.S. Yes, quite brilliant. I must own this.

Well, that makes for a welcome change in scenery and, of course, splendid company for the night!  ;D

It's not such a big deal. He doesn't have anything better to do anyway. The recording I recommended to you is pretty much the exact opposite of Karajan's in many respects, lean, mean, transparent, and very detail focused (don't tell Sarge that I recommended that Cleveland recording to you, OK, I am far too proud of being called an anti-American Nazi by him, so that stays among us, OK?). The best Mahler 5 out there in my completely irrelevant opinion are the ones with WP/Bernstein, KCA/Chailly and WP/Boulez (in chronological order).

Is the Bernstein/WP one you said the DG cycle where Leonard records with various orchestras (NYPO, VPO, RCO among others)?

Schoonderwoerd is an excellent fortepianist. Here he plays an 1836 Pleyel.

And here he's playing a tangent piano and a clavichord. The Fodor concerto is a delight:

. Bought for 8 euros last week. I listened to it and will post in the opera thread why I think it's the best Trovatore available (best but not perfect - that's simply impossible).

1953 recordings. Freitas Branco was a Ravel protégé. The composer greatly admired his conducting talent. He had prepared the orchestra that Ravel was to conduct in the 1930 gramophone recording of Bolero. When Ravel found himself unable to communicate his indications to the players, the actual recording session was given over to Albert Wolff. And yet, it was issued as conducted by Ravel! What's interesting is to find out that despite that close and privileged  relationship with the composer, Freitas branco went on to perform Bolero in 18'30" in his recording of the piece! Not to be confused with his brother Luis, the composer.

Of course I had to pick these in the second hand shop  :D

Plus some Gossec, Silvestrov, etc.
