Per Sargette & Georgina, Lenny's late recording of Tchaikovsky's 6th with NYPO on DGG.  ;D  8) (Hard to believe I'm indulging in this--do you know how much gasoline I could have bought instead?!)

You won't be sorry...well, okay, you might be. If so, send me the bill. All my recommendations come with Sarge's Seal of Approval and a money back guarantee.

This reflects the state of my bank balance. Only one CD today. Bought it for the cover art  ;D

Jezetha, Hector, do you guys know this recording?

Sarge

No, I don't. Fellow member Dundonnell very kindly sent me the Plasson perfomances of the 'Hymne', the 'Chant' and the 'Ouverture'. I have listened to them only once so far. What I remember of them is - not surprisingly - that they are all very passionate pieces. But I'd have to listen again to tell you more.

Sarge - LOL!  ;D  YES, great cover art - the painter is William Bouguereau (1825-1905) - his nude paintings seem to be quite popular for CD cover art - inserted another one above that is on the cover of a Chandos release - McEwen SQs; seems to be the same model w/ her head turned the other way!  He was amazingly 'photo-realistic' in these portraits, was part of the 'academic' French establishment as impressionism emerged - but still great cover art!  Dave

I saw this offer, too, from eclassical. What is good about Kokkonen's music?

It's great, but having just got it I need more time to listen to it.  I'll have to research a little about what they're about...the 1st movement of the third seems to echo war or the threat of it...we'll see, I'll post back.

Nice! Will be interested in your opion on that, Drasko. :)

Purchased yesterday:

Seems interesting. The picture is quite blurry, so: it contains harpsichord and fortepiano concetos by C.P.E. Bach, W.F. Bach, J.C. Bach, Johann Philipp Kirchberger, Johann Gottfried Müthel, Christoph Nichelmann, Francesco Antonio Rosetti, Ernst Wilhelm Wolf and Johann Gottlieb Naumann.

Wow! Please let us know how it is. :)
Haven't opened it yet, but it has received tons of praise from dozens of people in the know in various papers, magazines and websites.

This is the first time I've heard Sirota's work. The name was familiar - probably from these boards :) - and the price was good. I've already listened to the Chopin recital a couple of times. What achingly beautiful rubato, especially in the op. 52.

Unfortunately, the seller sent me the wrong disk instead of the Farewell Concert, so I'm waiting on an exchange there.

Two of the top piano CDs available IMO, you really chose exceptional, rarely mentioned winners here. Happy you like the old school playing too. After this disc any contemporary Chopin will most likely sound like heartless mechanical processing.

Of course, now I see it. I have the McEwen quartets (bought too for the cover  ;D ) but didn't make the connection. Thanks for pointing that out, Dave.

Bought the "Panzer" Symphony from an amazon seller:

I have the CPO Rangström set in my basket at JPC and will probably buy that too but Jezetha's comment about the broader tempo being more effective at one point in this Segerstam performance convinced me to start with his.

Finally received this one yesterday after a first aborted purchase attempt :

had a quick glimpse here & there... appears very thorough, but also very technical, more than i thought... lots of score extracts, etc... We shall see  :-\

Thanks for following my endorsement, Sarge. I have known this symphony for a very long time*, and I was always dissatisfied with the finale in Jurowski's performance. Segerstam is spot-on to my ears.

* Probably in a recording (LP) with Stig Westerberg, early 1980s. I remember a red sleeve.
