So does mine. She keeps telling me, I don't need anymore music. That I have enough.

Yeah, right.  ::)

Seriously, why does this set cost so little?

I don't know, but if I get an email saying they made a mistake, I will strangle someone. Preferably someone at Amazon.  ;D

What do you actually do for a living , Harry? I don't recall you ever sharing that with us (or if you did, I didn't see it).

Don't worry. I didn't get one when I ordered it for $24. ;)

Why don't they just do something normal like buy thousands upon thousands of CDs?   ;D

I thought it was the New Yorker in me that made me suspicious of that set. II guess it was just the human in me.

Yah!!

Everytime my girlfriend has anything to say about my buying habits, I refer her to the closet that houses her shoes.  8)

Well, Rubinstein was really a no-brainer. The Biret is more a personal taste thing.

I don't think this is actually a "chamber version"

I don't think so either (nothing on the cover or in the booklet indicates an "arrangement"). It's simply the Mahler Chamber Orchestra doing the Fourth. The reduced strings do change the balance; woodwinds are very prominent (at least they seem that way playing the recording by itself, without direct comparison to other recordings). It does have an interesting sound. Very fresh. I like Harding's direction in general. Hurwitz is right though: the climax of the slow movement doesn't have the emotional rush of most other versions. It's loud enough (although the strings get buried) but it didn't seem well prepared. Just kinda happened.

Anyway, an interesting listen; one I enjoyed.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

This is the first time I've heard Sirota's work. The name was familiar - probably from these boards :) - and the price was good. I've already listened to the Chopin recital a couple of times. What achingly beautiful rubato, especially in the op. 52.

Unfortunately, the seller sent me the wrong disk instead of the Farewell Concert, so I'm waiting on an exchange there.

I can't find a picture, but I also picked up Serkin's mono Beethoven, 2CD set on Music and Arts. I like Serkin's Mozart so thought I'd sample his Beethoven as well.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.
