I have that recording of Rienzi and I remember reading somewhere that it had cuts in it.

If you read this review it says it is not complete but doesn't tell you where the cuts are. Honestly do you care?

This cd, period instruments, should be fun!

Modern instruments.

Beethoven Academie was also famous for putting itself on ebay to be auctioned off in 2006 (Belgian government cut funding).  The sale didn't go through though.
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

Historically informed, in the strictest sense, only means it is informed. I am scientifically informed about the dangers of smoking. But I still light up my cigar to celebrate Kimi's homecoming.  ;D

Easy - you find another recording by that orchestra that is proven to be on period instruments.  ;)

Well, let's not put Rienzi on the same plain as Tristan, Götterdämmerung, or Parsifal (to pick three at random). Wagner himself certainly didn't. The early works that made into the 'Bayreuth canon' (i.e., the middle stage - Holländer, Tannhäuser, and Lohengrin) are as early as I would want to get on a regular basis. In fact, despite spinning Rienzi a couple of times, I'll say it again - the overture is the best part, and available elsewhere.
