Just took receipt of, and am listening to, the new EMI issue of Vaughan William symphonies 4 and 6 (Berglund), and 5 (Gibson). I'm only listening on my crappy work computer, but can tell this is fine stuff - integrated and convincing performances in nice warm sound.

I also received the Naxos disc of Prokofiev's cello concertos - looking forward to that one too!

I am listening to Sallinens 1st symphony on cpo.  I am slowly listening my way through this series that by and large has proved a revelation with marvellously inventive symphonies in fine sound and what seems good performances.

EDIT: Sorry, wrong thread. Moved.

I don't know these at all. Should be interesting :)

Excellent! Anticipating your impressions...

I am quite defensive in my acquisitions these days.
Hyperio9n has 100 cd's in the bargain range for 9,00 euro's, I could only find two that interested me.
See JPC de.

That's a dupe  :P
How do you mean? I remember thinking about getting this, just to hear how one might orchestrate it.

I expect Wand's set to be one of the crowning achievements of classicist Beethoven playing.

Hi, Harry. Are those flute or violin sonatas? I am a fan of the former. Please let us know how you like those CDs, I'd appreciate it.  :)

A very out of issue Mozart flute quartets cd with Irena Grafenauer, Gidon Kremer, and the Hagens, on Sony 1995. Can't even find it on Arkiv! Also, Harnoncourt's "The Musical Dialogue", finally!

Not Harry here, but I own the Vol. II disc w/ Convivium (these are 'violin sonatas' from Op. 9 w/ Elizabeth Wallfisch on the violin - assume Vol. I are other violin works).

Now, I've been looking at this Naxos 2-CD offering shown below - CLICK on the image for a great review! Dave  :D

This disc won't give you much of an idea of how to orchestrate Alkan, unfortunately. Klindworth's efforts in this direction are at best pedestrian and unnecessary. I'd give it a miss--the couplings are little better as you can get the first two Concerti da camera in much better performances with Hamelin (coupled with the legendarily difficult Henselt concerto) and the third is merely a reconstructed fragment.

Complete chamber output for  flute, huh? I think that'll go in the wish-list. :D I'm not familiar with the original works for violin - and that doesn't mean I can hum the tune of a flute sonata from memory, but I like what I have heard from Leclair for flute and harpsichord.

Correct on the first one Dave, they are other Violin works.
The Naxos set I have, and it is a good as the review says, even better. :)

Hello, Harry - just put in a 'small' Amazon Marketplace order this afternoon, which included the 2-CD Naxos offering of the Leclair flute works - seems like his flute writings were mainly 'transcriptions' from the violin sonatas from reading the review - but not a problem at all for me!  :D

I agree. Nothing special or worthwhile here. Furthermore, it has to be mentioned that only a truncated version of the first movement (op.39/8) is included, not the entire concerto. Not a big loss, considering the unimaginative (including the performers) result.

The only thing memorable from this disc is the reconstructed third concerto da camera with its haunting and memorable theme. I believe that's the only recording of it. The other two concerti da camera are better performed by Hamelin on Hyperion.

PS>I'm going to copy this exchange to the Alkan thread.

I have one of the two discs that makes up the twofer (Colin Davis' recordings of the CforO and Triple Concerto). I like it a lot: wonderfully Tippettian quirkiness.

I've been wondering about good recommendations for the symphonies: I have the composer conducting the 2nd and 4th (the only thing remaining of the BBC Music magazine I got it from) but don't have either the 1st or 3rd at all.
