I'm on a Lully roll at the moment. Arrived today:

Yum.

I have been considering that one...
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Just in from MDT:

Very interesting disc from a seemingly very fine, and underrecorded, composer. I have it, small scale and very charming music. Interestingly, this is (IIRC) the first half of a set, and I have been waiting for them to do the rest. But sinve this disc is 5-6 years old, the chances seem slight.....

Ah, too bad - the demise of the label's owner and of the label itself thereafter, undoubtedly intervened.
Maybe ARCANA's new owner will pick up things where Michel Bernstein left them?

I put one of the Lully operas on my netflix que.  Heard he was Beatles level popular during his time, should be interesting. :)

Love the avatar, Dave.  Looks like Gurn's cat.

In Texas, it may be called Texas Speed Bump, but in the Road Kill State, it is called Dinner.

You have permission to purchase CDs to celebrate MY birthday (2 days ago), or Vanessa's birthday (24th).

I counter-propose purchasing CDs to celebrate all three of our birthdays at the same time, come the 19th! ;)

Edit: Better yet, all four - my mother and I were born the same day.

Edit 2: ... of the month. Let's not cause any space-time paradoxes.

All Six! My brother in law and my nephew both has September 29th as their birthday!

I am beginning to wonder whether the celebratory CDs will be quite enough to cover the mounting tally of birthdays. :o ;)

Elgarian,  I would like to hear your opinion on this CD ...

I shall freely offer it, once I've listened. But I'm expecting to be thrilled with it, judging from the reviews I've read. (It's on the shortlist for the Gramophone awards for 2009.)

The opposite of a Lully lull, presumably?

If we were going to be strict about it, the opposite would have to be a Rolly lull. So we just need to find a composer called Rolly, and then we're onto a winner.

'It was no good,' said Lully, afterwards, concerning the Lullymania problem. 'We stopped doing live performances of Atys and Psyche because the singing couldn't be heard above the hysterical screams coming from the King and his court. We just did recordings instead after that.'

Correct! Behold.

(Credit goes to Google for the discovery - he's a licensed acupuncturist, to boot.)

Incidentally, I've never heard any of either gentleman's work.

Assuming I start with the historically less recent, would Psyche be a good place to start? I am intrigued by the subject matter.

I have both sets and for some reason I find myself listening to the other one more. I'm not sure why. :/
