Cool.  8)

I almost went with the used Biddulphs, but I like the idea of supporting Mark Obert-Thorn's work for Naxos.

The transfers on Biddulph were done by Ward Marston in 1994.

Ta take advantage of the last few days of a mdt offer:

RAGNAR SODERLIND Sedimenti Musicali; Cello Concerto; Symphony No.4

Oystein Birkeland, cello; The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio; Vladimir Fedoseyev

I have no experience with this neoromantic Norwegian composer.

Always a fan of the Orlando Consort I needed this!

The new erato

Thanks to current Simax/Aurora sales, my collection of Norwegian music is growing by leaps and bounds:

This is a largescale oartaorio by a major composer, whose two other discs on Simax are standouts!

My final missing volume in this series.

In the mail today from a couple of Amazon marketplace sellers: the Berglund Má vlast was one of three top recommendations in Gramophone's survey of 39 recordings. I usually like Berglund's performances anyway and the CD is very cheap. Cleveland, Dohnányi, Dvorak...self-recommending.

Thanks. I had inquired about that with a seller from amazon. I just figured that Mark Obert-Thorn's transfers will sound nice and buying the Naxos CDs would put some money in Naxos Historical's pocket, hopefully encouraging them to continue their fine work. I try to do this wherever possible, though I realize the effect is minimal.

Indeedy! That is a great one - both the symphony and the recording. It was my only 6 until I got the whole set with Rowicki.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Four CDs of which approximately 2 1/3 are songs, folk song arrangements, or scenas by Beethoven--60 all told, including Ferne Geliebte.
The remainder of CD 3 is devoted to Mozart (including a couple of songs now attributed to Leopold M.) and most of CD 4 to Haydn, but topped off by two early songs by Schoenberg and three early songs by Berg.   So it's not, by and large, the usual lieder fodder.

DFD sings like you would expect him to sing: like DFD. So judge accordingly. The performances range from 1959 (the Haydn, apparently in mono) to the mid-80s.

Four separate packages arrived today from Amazon sellers.

Edward said of Frandsen's perfomance of Nielsen's Third, "It's a good counterweight to Bernstein, much more pastoral in his view of the work." The CD includes Jensen's Sixth which I'm anxious to hear:

The ongoing conversation in the Langgaard thread concerning Stupel vs Dausgaard (and Järvi) made me curious to hear Stupel. I chose this disc because Jezetha said it has a different version of the Second Symphony:

Recordings of Liszt's late piano works are hard to come by but I found two for a reasonable price, including one Toucan recommended. There is only one piece duplicated (Am Grab Richard Wagners):

Someone posted a (London) LP rip of the fifth to SymphonyShare, just yesterday.

Arrived today.

Mike had alerted me to this a few days ago and I listened to some samples. I was so impressed that I placed my order long before the samples finished playing. It was being offered by Amazon uk for £3, postage included. I mean ... what? ... why?

Alas, someone seems to have spotted the flub, and it's now available at £6.99.

Well snagged, Alan!

I am very interested in your opinion of the sound. Is it a replacement for your old player?

Rather a backup for my Wadia 301 - I got a very good price on this model which already is very attractively priced for what it is, and offers SACD playback as well. But it will be a few days before I hook it up for trial.

No, but I have most of the same pieces on a recording by Andrew Davis with the BBC Symphony.  The only Delius disc I own, in fact.

Today's purchases:

Reading about Carl Vine for a year now and hearing about him from forum member Sid has prompted me to explore his music. I sampled some of the music on Vine's website and needless to say I was impressed. :)

Glazunov: Symphonies, Sveltanov, Warner Classics, 6-CDs
