I found this second hand

and I alsoi found this but cannot find a reference to it anywhere on the Net,

It is part of "The 50s" series which I already have two of (Walter, Haskil) and the label is Vandisc Belvideo.

This is Horowitz and the 2 disc set contains the Moussorgsky Pictures, Chopin's B flat minor sonata, the Haydn E flat sonata etc.

Does anyone have any information regarding this set? Is this Horowitz's famous recording of the PAAE?
Cheers

Holden

Well MI - I love Villa-Lobos and have an 'incomplete' set of the Choros on a single ASV disc, so the BIS set sounds right up my alley!  :D

Ordered today from the Amazon MP based on your opinions!  Expect to enjoy -   :)

As I have stated to others who enjoy VL on the forum, this set is self-recommending. These performances will knock your socks off. And the audio quality is just amazing (as usual with BIS). Can't wait to hear your impressions of the set.

I think Alwyn's Lyra Angelica is a masterpiece. Truly one of the best, if not the best, harp concerto ever composed and I have heard many of them: Ginastera, Gliere, Milhaud, among others.

Thanks for the rec.  I listened to it off of nml and oh boy I like it.  Will listen to it again, and the symphonies on the album and if I still like it... I will have to order it. :)

Alwyn's symphonies are cut from a very different cloth than his more pastoral orchestral works. Like for example, Symphony No. 3 is written in 12-tone, but you would never know it unless you had the score in front of you, because it sounds so lyrical and tonal. I like all of Alwyn's symphonies, especially the 3rd and 4th.

He apparently recorded it twice: once in studio, in 1947, and once live (Carnegie Hall) 1951.  Not sure which one is supposed to be the better performance.  What I have is this:
.
which contains a performance from 1948.    I should note that the sound quality on all three CDs in this series ranges from tolerable to horrendous:  PAAE sounds tolerable only because it follows a horrendous Liszt sonata.

George

I have this CD:

It's the 1951 Carnegie Hall performance.

Ordered wednesday in the europadisc Naxos promotion; with the flooding of Christmas mail it may be some time.

These forces, though, usually do sterling work in french repertoire on Naxos.

Harry

I have selected 22 recordings from the label Sterling, and will post them soon, I would love some feedback on them however, I mostly selected orchestral works from unknown Symphonists, starting somewhere in 1860-1965.

Naxos Direct UK is still trying to clear its DaCapo discs, and I have a few spare pennies.

The first in particular caught my eye when I saw the composer described as "a Danish Françaix".

Some great discs right there. Arnold's 5th and 6th are two of my favorites. The Piazzolla is beautiful disc and the McKay is great as well. Do you own the McKay Naxos disc with Moonlit Ceremony on it? That's a good recording.
