It wasn't me. After I bought the hurdy-gurdy version of Winterreise there was a conversation about women performing Winterreise (I was agin it  ;D ) and someone (don't recall who now) recommended I listen to Schäfer. I still haven't heard it. What do you think of it?

Ok, I recall someone saying something good about it.

I have owned the Schäfer's version of Winterreise for months, though I am not sure if I have made a glowing recommendation for it ...

Do you know, I bought the Masur set, when I went out among the brick-&-mortar shops looking for the Zinman . . . which I didn't find, but I found the Masur, and decided to give it a shot.  Glad I did!

I have the Masur set in my Beethoven edition, it's not half bad. :)  Zinman is very fast Karl, he is an acquired taste in the symphonies.  I thought his style worked very well in the easily heavy sounding Missa Solemnis though.  I'm looking forward to hearing how Harnoncourt sounds in that work (also part of that 14 cd box set).

No. I already had ten cycles by the time Zinman's came out. At some point you just have to say enough is enough  :D  ...although I'm still contemplating buying one of the recent cycles: Norrington or Vänskä or Järvi or Dausgaard.

Sorry, I remember the discussion, and someone referring to Schäfer's version as being very stark.  Searching the forum hasn't turned it up.

note added:

Actually it was jlaursen, but you piped up right afterwards.

I do not have ANY of the recent cycles: Norrington or Vänskä or Järvi or Dausgaard but I already have 24 cycles plus probably 40+ versions of the 9th, and I am done for good ...   ;D

Do you have the Masur's Beethoven cycle on PentaTone, which is what I have.  I believe Masur might have recorded another cycle ...

No, I've got a later set on Philips (I think). DDD, lovely sound, neither too stodgy, nor too highly perfumed . . . .

Ah yes, I remember now. Of course, Jens. And I do like Schäfer's voice (have her in Bach, Mahler, Mozart, Schönberg, Zemlinsky). I should give her Winterreise a try.

PentaTone=Philips like a phoenix from the ashes.  You could be dealing with an sacd remaster.  If it is early 80s I believe that is what Karl and I have.

Ironically, on my walkabout at lunchtime today, I stepped into Borders, and I did find the Zinman . . . five clunky jewel cases, and the set priced at $32. I don't think I paid quite that much for the Masur. In any case, glad that I chanced upon the Masur set that fateful day, I love it!

PentaTone has reissued some of the old Philips Quadraphonic recordings on SACD, the Masur Beethoven is in that catagory.  You can recognize these by a logo with a Q on the cover.  I have a few of them and mostly I find the quad sound a bit distracting compared with the stereo (I have the Beaux Arts Brahms on Pentatone and Philips CD and I don't find the Pentatone an enhanced experience).

Which orchestra plays on your Masur / Philips set? Leiozig Gewandhaus or New York Philharmonic?

Just noticed, the Masur/Gewandhaus on Philips DUO is not the same cycle as the one (also originally Philips) on Pentatone.  The Pentatone one is from '72 or so, the one on Philips must be more recent, judging by the lineup of singers in the 9th.
