Just bought:

I'm always interested in hearing unique ballets and I heard this one is really an exciting, original work. Possibly the only well-known work from this Australian composer, John Antill.

I haven't heard that in years, but one of my all-time favorite listening experiences was walking through the post-hurricane streets of Houston, headed back to my apartment at midnight along the tracks of trains which had been discontinued after the storm, with "Corroboree" blasting into my ears at an unhealthy volume. Somehow, music very well-suited to nighttime walks... if you don't scare easily!

Opera proper is (um...will be) in da house!

DVDs

Don Giovanni - Levine, MET and Terfel as the Don - DG
Le Nozze di Figaro - Gardiner - Archiv

Both composed by some late-18th century hack.

A rather odd combination - but I never know what bargains come my way. :D

And it does reflect two of my musical interests: Old Music and old recordings... 8)

Lorenzo Ghielmi and his ensemble will securely be a winner combination. I have their Haydn disc and it's excellent.

The Feo is great (I have it). Outstanding mention on newolde.com as well "This is an outstanding recording and clearly is the best recording to date of Feo's music. The ritornello in Track 15 sounds quite similar to the opening of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater."

Yep; that comes as quite a surprise.

I can't wait to hear it, Brian. What do you think about the music itself?

Comparisons to Sensemaya are apt, Le sacre not so much; it's got a few short little dances which are sort of wispy and ephemeral but the opening and closing movements are as savagely violently fun as music can get. Each time I listen I have a total blast - no masterpiece but one of those pieces that reliably makes me grin at its audacity. Ointment-fly: really long pauses between tracks.

Excellent, Brian. Thanks for the feedback. 8) This ballet sounds like it's right up my alley. :D

Listening to Symphony No. 3.

Your post, MI, reminded me that I've been thinking of this set, and also the Orchestral Works 1948-1971 set. The 1936-1948 set landed just this past weekend, and I've started tucking in to it.

I guess it's only a question of time before a Copland box is released in the Sony Masters box series. No documentation of course, but I have decided to wait for this instead of hunting the remaining volumes down (I have one of 3 I think).

Today I got the following confirmation:

Amazon.co.uk items (Sold by Amazon EU S.a.r.L.):

  1                    Piano Works   £13.66               1   £13.66

Dispatched via Royal Mail (estimated arrival date: September 26, 2011).

It's the Rheinberger 10 CD set ordered before they corrected the faulty pricing. Hooray!

All the three sets are great, Karl and have provided me many hours of pleasure. Throw in Bernstein's classic Sony recording (w/ Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid) and you have pretty much all you need as far as Copland orchestral music goes I think.

Today, at the local McNally Robinson bookstore.  That, along with the book "Rebuilding:  When Your Relationship Ends"   ;D

Felt so tempted by the amazing power, beauty, excitment and passion that I heard in a few excerpts from this cd that I just had to hear it! :)

My second recording of what has recently become one of my favourite works of all time!

A unfairly little known British composer who tragically died in the First World War, who deserves a place in everyone's cd collection! Really beautiful, enjoyable calm music.

Both discs I have. While the Delius doesn't appeal strongly to me, the Belcea disc is simply magnificent.
