Just ordered from Amazon:

The British Composers--Ralph Vaughan Williams, complete symphonies {Box Set}, performed by both the New Philharmonia Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Adrian Boult.

Just bought some Kancheli I didn't own:

Mirror Image,

I don't know peanuts about the music. However, Kim Kashkashian is one of my favorite musicians. The colors she produces with her viola and how natural her phrasing sounds... simply outstanding. Hope you enjoy.

Great choice, Gold Knight. It's hard to beat Boult in RVW.

Thanks, John, I'm especially looking--or hearing forward--to hearing his reading of the Second Symphony, of which I've grown most fond.

Text is online (if that satisfies):

Thank you, that will work nicely!

Thread duty; nothing ordered,  nothing landed.

Thanks, yes, she is a lovely musician isn't she? I have another recording of her performing Bartok's Viola Concerto. Wonderful playing indeed.

My favorite RVW symphonies are the 3rd through the 6th and the 8th. The 5th contains one of the most exquisitely beautiful movements in all of 20th Century music: the Romanza.

I'm rather fond of his 2nd, too.

Well a long absence for me from this thread & a less frequent visitor to the forum - have been traveling & also 'culling out' sections of my non-classical music collection (stuff we have not listen to in years & now wondering why we ever bought some of that music!).

But missing classical music & based on magazine recent reviews & previous comments here, I placed an order at MDT for the recordings below - MDT has re-done their forum and 'My Account' disappeared!  Assume w/ the migration, MDT lost my previous login information and likely my purchase record; well no big deal, I guess - looking forward to getting back into the classical music world!  Dave :)

Bach, JS - Piano Concertos w/ Lifschitz & Stuttgart Chamber Orch - 2 CDs
Eberl, Anton - Piano Concertos w/ Paolo Giacometti & Riko Fukuda.
Faure, Gabriel - Cello Sonatas w/ Gerhardt & Licad.
Glazunov, Alexander - Complete Symphs & Concs w/ Serebrier & many! - 8 CDs
Kalkbrenner, Friedrich - Piano Concs No. 2/3 w/ Shelley & Tasmanian SO.
Schumann, Robert - Violin Sonatas w/ Wallin & Pontinen

But then we don't get to enjoy two separate postings!  This reduces our vicarious pleasure with your good fortune.  Please try to think of us more in these pages....  :D

Oh, ok then ;)

This purchase was from a few days ago, and I am planning for another one in the coming week. :)

Also, the score of Mahler 2, and another Strauss cd, which I won't reveal so it can be a surprise for all the Also Sprach comparision people! :)

Very much looking forward to all of these! :)

Great choice. ;) By the way, the Dvorak recording looks good too. Andre Previn is really one of the great conductors of our time.

The Kalkbrenner is good (though I prefer the first disc from Hyperion more). Still, the usual high standard here. Hope you enjoy it and welcome back from your hiatus.

Thank you, John! Very excited to hear some of Schuman's music!

Yes - am very excited to hear this Dvorak recording! Hearing my colleague perform it with the Academy Orchestra a few weeks ago in concert made me fall in love with the work all over again. This performance is Sarge's favourite, and I have been very very impressed with Schiff. And I agree, Previn is an outstanding conductor. Very excited to hear it! :)

I do hope you enjoy them. By the way, you mentioned you're going to be making another purchase soon. What recordings are on your list this time around?

Drasko

Dvorak finally landed, will never understand why it takes three weeks from US amazon and about 10 days from anyone else in the US. Svetlanov from MDT for 3 euros.

liuzerus87

Still waiting for this... hopefully in the next week or so.

Thank you, John - will report back! :)

Yes - although, I haven't quite planned out that list completely. I know that I'll definitely want to order the new Ivan Fischer recording of Mahler 1. Then, there is a whole list of recordings I would certainly love to get including Bernstein's Shosty 5, Rattle's Sibelius 5/Nielsen 4 and his Shosty 10, Elgar's 'The Spirit of England', Martinon's or Boulez's Ravel, Bernstein's or Abbado's La Mer, the Bernstein conducts Bernstein box etc... and the list goes on and on... Will have a hard job trying to choose between all these options! But don't worry, I'll almost certainly get the Lenny Shosty 5. :)

Excellent. Please make sure it's the Bernstein 1979 performance, Daniel. This, along with his 7th with the CSO, is his most passionate Shostakovich recordings.

Only 1/3 true. The Schiff I mentioned was with Sir Colin and the Concertgebouw. I've never heard the Schiff/Previn/Vienna, but I can't imagine it to be anything but fine.

Thank you, John - will do. I've been wanting to buy this recording for quite a long time now, eversince you posted about it on the listening thread for the first time in fact! :)

It appears Schiff has recorded Dvorak's CC at least three times on the Philips label: Previn/VPO, Davis/Concertgebouw, and Marriner/ASMF. Of the three choices, I would have gone with Previn too just because I like Previn's conducting much more than Davis' or Marriner's.
