Muti's Tchaik 5th is boring; Karajan's on EMI is much better! (Although sadly split across two CDs.)
So I bought this from the UK site. It's the same as the 8-disc DG box, but with the 70s recordings of 4-6, and reordered to fit on 7 CDs.

Already received this box set on the afternoon. All CDs are newly remastered. Beethoven cycle and Bruckner 3,8,9 are taut, fast but imaginative.  ;D

Two very interesting releases.

Opus106

Scored a SDCB with a long OOP Philps 2-fer. The volume of Richard Strauss lieder from the 'Jessye Norman Collection'. Yes, I bought it just for the those four lieder. :)

And rightly so!!! What creamy deliciousness that is... and Kurt Masur at his one and only best.

Sorry... I spoke to early, too facetiously: His other best is, even more unexpected, the Brahms VC with Mutter in New York. On paper the dreaded  triple-yawn combination, in reality white-hot sensational.

I assume they used the same transfers as for this for the Bruckner:

I have everything but Bruckner's Third, so I'll skip the box, but you're right about "taut, fast but imaginative."  His LvB is some of my favorite, and his Decca box has some real gems.  A great conductor to these ears.

Good call. 8)

A friend pleaded with me, almost in tears, to find Schwarzkopf superior, in any of her recordings, and insisted on playing one after the other until I gave in - but sorry, bub, that's just not going to happen. ;D

This Bruckner 3rd is one of the best performances out there. I only have mp3 copies of 3, 8 and 9, and an earlier french EMI Release of the Beethoven. I'm tempted. Sorely tempted. Decision, decisions... ::) I think I'll wait a few weeks after the release date. Used copies will probably go for 25$ ;D

No it ain't, because the best is della Casa.

Arrived this morning from JPC: Mahler 1, Solti/Chicago; and Ernst Pepping (1901-1981) Symphonies 1, 2, 3 and the Piano Concerto.

The Pepping is quite a bargain: two CDs for €9.99, free shipping.

I bought this twofer a few months ago and came away with a somewhat undecided opinion about the set, i.e. not sure if it is really all that wonderful as some people have claimed.  What are your thoughts?
