Must be a tiny fellow, eh? Or does he have hairy feet?

You decide  :D

Although he's practically my homie (the director of Heidelberg and Mannheim chamber outfits, twenty-five miles or less from my home) I have yet to see him live. Don't know how tall he really is...but from the photos, I wouldn't be surprised if he could walk about the Shire without being noticed.

I see you're growing your Haydn collection with Fey. I have one or two of his discs, and though I liked the articulation and clarity of his approach, I recall some of his tempos as more than a little brisk. Is this a general tendency with his approach?

I'm rarely bothered by any of his tempo choices (unlike, say, Bruno Weil's). Yes, he's energetic and appropriately brisk in most cases (his finales do tend to fly). The slow movements flow beautifully in what I believe to be a true Classical style. He's more Szell than Lenny. On the other hand, occasionally he can be closer to Bernstein in some of his choices. The Largo introduction to 102 for example:

Klemperer 1:52
Minkowski 1:55
Norrington 1:58
Tate           2:03
Fey            2:18
Bernstein   2:31

Just had these two delivered.  Stab in the dark on the MDG Brahms.

Great deal from the USA on the Haitink CSO Mahler 3rd.  £1.45 like new, delivered for £2.71

The Mahler 3 should go in the Super Duper thread for anyone in the UK wanting a copy.  I haven't checked the price on Amazon USA.

Wow. If I didn't already have it I would jump on the M3 deal. I like that one quite a bit. And thanks to the weird shipping policies of Amazon.uk vs Amazon.com, you pay  substantially less to have items shipped from us to you than vice versa!

Didn't see that $2 brand new.  I was using the UK sites link to the USA.  I guess its the same price when all said and done.  Maybe mine is sealed when I get home.  The Mrs never mentioned it  ;D

No brainer to snap this up...everyone who loves Mahler!!!

Hope Daniel is reading?  ;D

Yeah, I thought of him when I saw several MTT Mahler symphonies offered for $1 from ideals late Friday, but it would have been 5 a.m. GMT at the time and the deals shut down shortly after I happened onto them.

That they did it again the following evening makes me wonder if it's a marketing tactic. I know that I and many others will be checking their storefront pretty frequently from now on!

Surprised you're just getting this one, Sarge. It's a great No.52. How's the newest release with No.102?

When I started collecting Fey, I put off buying most of his Sturm und Drang symphonies and Londons because I was already well supplied. But the other day I noticed bargains from the marketplace and decided to add them now. Besides today's arrival, 41 44 47 93 96 & 97 are on the way. Still thinking about 104/94.

The 102 is very fine, but 89 and 105 are the real gems on this disc, and both a more pressing need. In fact, Fey's is my first 105 on CD.

Sarge and GS, head over to Papa's Haus and see my post on the 105.

The 93/96/97 is one of the few Baggins recordings I don't own, Sarge, and that 44 will put hair on your chest  :o at times sounds as if they employed a Mahlerian sized French horn section.

C'mon No.80 and 98! Is there someone we can write to about which ones to record next  ;)

I was actually seriously wondering about that myself a couple of days ago when I did some calculations, projecting a date for the cycle's completion. It ain't pretty :(  80 and 98 are on my shortlist too of works I'd like to see done sooner rather than later (and, in my case, at my age, maybe too late  :'( )  The Stumbling Goat (the C minor 78), my fave 99 Cat and 72 (I want to hear Fey's horns tear this up :) ) are also on it.

Just received this set, in a later edition published by a Dutch newspaper in 2009.

Pretty excited about it. So far, it is sounding very good!

I also noticed that there's a new cycle to be released soon with the same forces, on Glossa. Interesting..
