30-CD EMI Elgar box - not sure who the conductor was

In the 30 CD box, probably Barbirolli. Looks like you've got quite a few. Surprised to see you don't own the Boult/LSO performance. That's a great performance, but there are many for this work.

Well, not a purchase, but a beautiful gift given to me by my best friend.  Two old LPs that had been stored in his mother's basement.  Now, I need an LP turntable, as I have another LP, an opera LP (Ponchielli - La Gioconda - Callas/Teatro Alla Scala, conducted by Antonino Votto), given to me free when I bought some CDs at this local bookstore!  :)

Anyways, here are the two LPs my friend gave me last night:

Beethoven

Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 36
The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43 (Selections)

Boston Symphony Orchestra
Erich Leinsdorf

RCA Victor Red Seal

Beethoven

Symphony No. 6 in F  major, Op. 68 'Pastoral'

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Sir Charles Groves

RCA

Is it in that EMI Boult Icon box, which I plan on getting at some point?

No, there's no performances of any British music in that set.

I'm excited, Stuart!  :)  Just got to find one now!  They seem to be making quite a comeback.

I am curious as to how many GMG members actually have turntables?  I know Bill (Bogey) definitely has at least one TT and he also listens to LP quite regularly.  OTOH, I last listened to an LP over a year ago, even though I still have some 4000 LP's in my classical music library.  My CD collection has comfortably surpassed my LP collection as of the early last year ...

Do you like Holst's The Planets? If yes, and you don't own this recording with Boult:

This performance of the Engima Variations is the same one from the recording you posted above.

If you don't mind the Pomp & Circumstance Marches as a coupling, then I would get that recording. I personally bought that recording for the Enigma Variations plus I bought it for $2, so not bad at all.

IMO, the best version of the Pomp & Circumstance Marches is by Barbirolli and in fact, that was the very first classical LP I ever owned - was then a freshman in college.  Clearly, I was elated when I saw the same recording in that Elgar box a few months ago ...

Yeah, I just never cared for these works. Doesn't matter who performs them for me. My opinion remains the same.

I already own the MP3 of this superb disc, but found a dealer selling a used copy for $5 that includes shipping. This one could make my desert island list, incredible sound, Queyras' cello is gorgeously warm.

I have absolutely nothing by Diepenbrock, but he sounds like a composer I'll like.

Nor any of Celi.,  so I figured it's time to find out what life in the extremely slow lane is like.
