Doesn't the big blue box already have these symphonies?

Noticed I called the Berglund blue box 'the Helsinki box.' ;) Anyway, what Brian said, but the Bournemouth SO are featured in the performances of the tone poems and other orchestral works.

So, what's the consensus as to performance, etc.?  Which one is better, if there is such a thing to be said?

Chamber Orchestra of Europe, actually.

(Although to be fair: it can barely be compared to the other two traversals, it's so different.)

I've never heard Berglund's Bournemouth SO symphonic cycle. Berglund's cycle with the Helsinki PO is still one of my favorite Sibelius cycles out of the 18 that I own. The Helsinki PO perform admirably well. The Bournemouth SO performances of the tone poems and various orchestral works under Berglund are a little scrappy. This orchestra doesn't hold a candle to Helsinki, but they're overall performances are pretty good. At the end of the day, I'm still in awe of Berglund's Helsinki performances for their passion, commitment to the music, and for their energy.

Thanks, Greg. I already owned two recordings from this box set (Tango Ballet, Eight Seasons), but I'm such a Piazzolla nut that I couldn't help myself.

I also bought this for $3:

I think Harry was seconding Ray's motion that he (Ray) buy no more until he's listened to the discs which he (Ray) already has . . . .

Que

Stuff totally unknown to me - but they were bargains and the label E Lucevan Le Stelle seemed Italian, so naturally I was intrigued. 8)

On line samples sounded nice to - so I'm giving these a go. :)

I like that disc. Not sure it won't be too 'romantic' for you, but it sure is tuneful.

Aren't most of these composers from the 20th Century? I know O'Riada is (I'm still waiting on a recording of his orchestral works from overseas). I'm quite certain Gerald Victory is from this era. I'm not expecting it to be 'Romantic' in the Brahms or Schumann sense. Anyway, thanks for your feedback, Neal.
