Directed by Stanley Kubrick?

No, that was good ol' Ludwig Van.

I just could not resist any longer and I bought the large Wagner - Solti box from Presto Classical:

I bought the Ring a little over 2 years ago and it is still in shrinkwrap.  My set cost about $84.

Hi Andrei - I own the Mancini - you should enjoy!

As of late I've been quite a sucker for Baroque flute / recorder music so I have high expectations about it.

I'll be interested to hear your comments on the guitar transcriptions of this composer.  Dave :)

Will post them in WAYLT thread as soon as I listen to it.

I haven't listened to all the recordings included, but it must be certainly a great box; Solti's performances of the Ring Cycle, Tannhäuser and Parsifal are absolutely gorgeous.

I only have the Solti's Ring and Tannhauser.  I am happy with the Parsifal by Karajan and Kubelik.  I may also have the Parsifal by Kempe on LP IIRC ...

I have Solti's Ring, Tannhäuser, Parsifal and Der fliegende Holländer; although I prefer Karajan's recordings (except for Tannhäuser, which I've never heard performed by the austrian conductor yet :(), I think Solti was an excellent wagnerian interpreter too. In particular, the first three are some of the finest versions I've ever listened to.....very beautiful, powerful and with a great sound quality.

I do not have Der fliegende Holländer on CD but am pretty sure I have it on LP.  My understanding is the only Tannhauser Karajan ever conducted was a live performance.  However, the overall performance was not that great because the fellow that sang Tannhauser was not well when he performed - I read about this anecdote in the biography - Karajan, A Life in Music by Richard Osborne ...

I have only heard Solti's Das Rheingold so far, so I am rather excited to hear what's in the box. I own several complete Rings, but I do not have any other Wagner operas on CDs (with the exception of Furtwängler's Tristan). I might as well fill that gap with Solti.  It's definitely not the last Wagner box I'm buying.

Some Naxi from amazon.es as they were only around 4 Euros (after VAT deduction):

A cheap way to get a V-L symphony series, event though they are somewhat variable in quality (the IRR reviewer called the final movement in one of these a bloody mess).

I don't have any Busoni concerto work  except for the monster piano concerto, and the La Vecchia series of modern Itlaian music overall are pretty fine.

Listende to Diamond's 8th a while ago after some discussions on this board, and became convinced I needed the rest of the series (I have nr 2/4 in its Delos guise).

That's great, Furtwängler's Tristan is absolutely awesome; the most beautiful, passionate performance of that opera ever recorded in my opinion! I hope you will enjoy the rest of the Ring Cycle as well as the other operas included in the box. :)

Really? I didn't know that, thank you for the feedback. Hmm, I thought Karajan conducted Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festival too....

Good choice. I enjoyed this and wrote a pleased review. Here's a very abridged version:

QuoteI always thought of Ferruccio Busoni as a very serious, somewhat dour composer, maybe because he lavished so much time on transcriptions and arrangements of Bach, and maybe because on top of that his most performed original works are the Berceuse elégiaque, the Fantasia contrappuntistica, and the massive hour-long Piano Concerto. My mistake! This is the lighter, wittier side of Busoni, and it is a truly delightful CD.

Nothing here is very serious at heart, but it's all astonishingly well-done. Aside from Martucci's Tarantella and a few bits of Casella, this is my favorite discovery so far in Naxos' Italian Classics series; the woodwind soloists are closely spotlit and the sound is a bit crude but suits the music's vivaciousness. The Rome Symphony and Francesco La Vecchia give high-spirited performances which are very confident indeed, and a booklet note is highly informative, although the descriptions of the music leave little to the imagination.

This Tannhäuser set by Karajan was available for under $30 a few years ago but is now too pricey since it is OOP and DG may not bother to re-issue it ...
