Except *technically* neither by Bach nor (most likely) composed for the organ*.  ;)

* Andrew Manze has made a persuasive (recorded) case for those musicologists who argue that the T&F was intended for violin, originally... and that Bach's version is a transcription for organ.

I know about the controversy about the authorship, but I hadn't come across Manze's argument until now. Do you have a link?

Yes, Sir, I do. Although I think you might have misunderstood my particular use of the term "argument".  ;)

Or maybe I should have been the one to put the word within quotes. ;) Thanks for those links. Historically correct or not, I like this version very much.

And inferring from the fact that a transcription did not considerably alter my appreciation for the music, I conclude once and for all, that this must be the work of the man himself. :D

Wait... now you've got my brain in a twist. Do you conclude that it must be Bach because even after Bach transcribed it for organ it remains great?
Or because even after Manze transcribed it from organ (into its alleged original form), it remains great?  :D

Even without knowing Bach had anything to do with it, it sounds great in two different instrumental versions -- one which almost every one of us has "grown up" with, and the other, a mere speculation, played on an instrument which is a far cry from the mighty organ. What else can one say, but Bach. :D

Oops ... I thought this was a Rob Newman thread.
