Have been listening to the Purcell recording of these classic trio sonatas, on four long CDs: the invention is consistent though not always really original, despite claims that his ideas became 'cliched' only through use by later composers. The concerti grossi clearly brought the best out of him.

Opus 5 and 6 are his best works. It's hard to imagine Handel writing his own concerti grossi without the example set by Corelli.
