I can't close this thread, lock it or get rid of it, so I've removed the piece in question as all detective stuff has been done.   :-[

That sounds like Havergal Brian to me. If so, don't even bother asking which symphony...

mahler10th

I am replying to nothing.
Greg posted an effort to help me, but I got my answer, and I removed the references from the post.  So for a whole day Greg had a post like this hanging in the main foyer, and I thought it seemed unfortunate in it's phrasing and suggestion epsecially as Greg was he last one to post.  So now it's my name (OP) with the now non existent 'embarassing' problem - instead of it looking like Greg has got an embarassing problem which I'm sure he doesn't in fact have any embarassing problems.

If you got an answer, would you mind sharing it?  If you looked at the download count before you removed the mp3 many of us listened to it but were unable to help.  As one of them, I would please like to know what the piece was.

My sincere apologies David.. :-[

The piece was Schoenbergs Chamber Symphony 1 under Horenstien and the BBC Northern SO.
It was coupled with Sibelius 5 by the same forces on CD.

I've tried, tried, but Schoenberg isn't really for my ears, that is why I had trouble identifying it.

Hah!  I thought I had heard it before!  But the best I could think of was 20th century.  Thanks.

Diletante

Orgullosamente diletante.

Duh!  :P
But I don't have that piece on CD- listened to it several times online, that's it. I knew it sounded familiar, too...

I was half way there John.  My guess was Schoenberg, but I thought it might be the orchestral version of Verklacht Nacht.
