This is an odd thread to start, but I've found a couple of things lately that qualify for a thread of this sort, so I'd love to hear from others on this topic. No real criteria for determining what goes in here, so feel free to stretch it if you feel it might be useful to those of us not wanting to waste money on individual discs when they are better had through box sets or cheaper releases.

Here's what I'm talking about...

I recently found out that these two were also present in this box set. (Thanks, George!)

And, it seems that Pierre Fournier's recording of the Bach Suites is available in two releases, the second being significantly less expensive. (Am I correct on this? Are these the same recording?)

-->

Others that would be good to know about?

These ones caught me out a while back:

Given that I've been interested in these for a while, I figured I should list what I consider to be a better bargain.

Lethe,

A great example of what I'm talking about! Thanks for the heads-up!

In this case, aren't the 4 seperate releases cheaper than the big box?

Yes, by a couple of bucks.

Just got this, can't say much about it yet except that the box set is much cheaper than the individual discs. :)

Great thread, and I know full-well I'll be back here regularly, but ....

Is this REALLY about saving money in the case of the boxed sets?  Or about feeding the obsessive completist urge within us all?  Hand on heart, do we really believe we'll listen to the other stuff in these packages?

I'm reminded of my darling, super-intelligent wife, who always quotes how much she's saved at the sales, rather than how much she's spent - even though it's all her own money!

Anyway, the cheaper direct reissues are pretty much unproblematic, so apologies for the distracting aside and bring on the bargains!

Uh welcome, no there is no subtext to this thread.  There are other threads about feeding the completist ocd urge, and we're very open about it.  Perhaps you should get to know the forum first before offering criticism?

Hi David (and thanks for the 'uh welcome'!)

It was self-criticism as much as anything.  Sorry if I came across as aggressive, though I think there's always a sub-text in anything we write, even if we're unaware of it.  I realise I'm a young whippersnapper here.  Put it down to the arrogance of youth?!

Anyway, as The Great Helmsman said: 'Let a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools of thought contend.'

The Chopin box that I listed at the beginning of the thread is the same price as the Nocturnes set alone. In that case, the box set gave me the Ballades and Scherzos for free along with a bunch of other stuff. That's saving money!

For the Kempff discs I listed, the two-disc set plus the Originals release was $30. The box set including both those plus the remaining sonatas is $40-ish. That's a pretty good deal! (5 more CDs for $10 more.)

You see, once we had a Newman to vent on, after he left, it's not just the same any more and we try to compensate for the void in our lives by snapping on anyone.

;D

Welcome, BTW.

People often think that way.  It's much more gratifying to key on savings when spending money; the only problem is that an expenditure is not an act of savings.
