Well, I can always read the James on my own  8)

Well, yes. Are you going to read The Monk if that's what we decide?

The Monk (1796) by Matthew Gregory Lewis

Ok, no Cliffsnotes. I bought my copy today.

Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.  ~ Henry David Thoreau

Sweet. Mine's coming in the mail. Any time now.

Great Gatsby seems like it would be easy to find. I've never read it. The Monk I'll probably have to get via interlibrary loan, so it might not arrive in time. (I've been waiting for a volume of Kleist stories for a month now.  ::))

:) It'd probably also be an excuse to read some American lit. and other stuff to which my wanderings haven't led me.

By coincidence the book club i have joined has chosen TGG as its next choice
Have nearly finished and is fascinating but not an easy read as difficult to know what is true and what is not - I will be interested in views on this board  :)

Welcome, offbeat.

Just got my Gatsby in the mail. I'm all ready for September.  :)

I think once September is over, I will start a thread here called: "GMG-CLC Great Gatsby Spoiler Thread" and that's where we'll discuss the novel.

Another vote for Henry James.  I've been doing the Teaching Company's American Lit course (excellent BTW), so I'm already planning to read it soon anyway.  ;)

I remember reading The Monk in grad school.  I don't remember being that impressed by it, but that was years ago -- I'll follow along with interest if that's the pick.  Certainly no substitute for Bram Stoker, if anybody still hasn't read Dracula.
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Got my Gatsby at a local Borders (one of about 10 copies there) so need for a special order.

Hmmm.......for October, I vote for Screw, cause I've got a copy at home somewhere that I've never found the chance to read through.

Dickens sounds like a good choice for a Winter read; maybe we can arrange for a Steinbeck selection in the Spring.

Dude you seriously you need to just start a naked poll (who voted for what shown).  Technology can help you. :)

But then I won't know who voted. We might get non-participants.

No that's the whole point, you would know we would all know.  The poll results would show who voted for who.  That was what Maciek was getting at.  Let me poke around and make sure... but most forums have it, I just don't think anyone uses it here.

DavidW

Oh never find this forum lacks that ability, my bad!

Oh and we don't have banana emoticons.  Just saying... ;D
