Well, taking a comment from Kullervo in the movie thread, was wondering what pieces of music you find enjoyable, yet emotionally draining.
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

George

#1
Shostakovich, Symphony 11, Mravinsky

Shostakovich SQ 1-13, Borodin, Chandos

Tchaikovsky, 6th symphony, Bernstein

Beethoven, 9th symphony, HvK '63

Beethoven, Op. 111, Yudina

Schubert 2nd Piano Trio

Mahler, 6th Symphony, Barbirolli

Any of Richter's Schubert Piano Sonatas

Horowitz, Rachmaninov Piano Sonata 2, Live 1981, RCA

....just to start.... ;)

I'll restrict myself to works (or parts thereof), rather than performers:

Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony - the final movement only

Tippett's Concerto for Double String Orchestra - specifically, the third movement: exciting, yet also draining by its close

Beethoven's and Saint-Saens' Third Symphonies - the first movement of each

Paganini's First Caprice for Violin

Respighi's Toccata for Piano and Orchestra

Beethoven's Third - the first movement

Really?  That one always gets me pumped up.  Its the SECOND movement that drains me.

That's my point - I get so pumped up, that by the time I'm through air conducting, I'm drained. ;D

Novi

Beethoven, opp. 57, 106. 111

Bruckner 9, especially the Giulini/VPO 3rd movement, which stretches me almost to breaking point before the final minutes easing into a cathartic calm (for me anyway).

Mahler 6, which, by contrast, lulls you almost to silence, then WHAM! finishes you off.

Mahler Das Lied von der Erde, those final ewigs (Janet Baker for me please) are incredibly moving and so, so sad ...

Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.

I'm pretty much "spanked" at the end of LvB's 5th and 9th as well.

That may top my list.

So you have it? Or it may top your 'to buy' list?

Harry

Pettersson's Symphonies are draining for me, even one movement can stop me in my tracks altogether.
Depends on my emotional stamina that day, but suffice to say, that no other music has quite the same effect on me.

Correct Harry, now your talking seriously draining music.... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

greg

basically, 90% of the music written by Mahler, Shostakovich or Pettersson.

orbital

DSCH's Viola Sonata. (I find it devoid of feeling, perhaps that's why it leaves me empty in the end.)

and Radiohead in general

Good Day Harry,
I believe about a month ago you were trying to come up with a word to describe the state he left you in. I had asked you if he left you  in a draining state and you replied thats exactly right. I know because thats the state he leaves me in.....I never feel drained from Beethoven, but somewhat from Shostakovich amongst others...I guess everyone has different draining tolerances.
