With AGP155, we take a break from our nostalgic revue of the early avant-garde to get back to some more mission-critical material. This is the first of three or four more installments in the US Electronic Series, and comprises a transcription of a CRI LP (SD 476) featuring works by Meyer Kupferman. The electronic parts of these works are recordings with little electronic manipulation by the same performer who plays live in the piece. In the first track it is piano (Gilbert Kalish) and in the third violin (Max Pollikoff). The combination of live and recorded piano in the first track reminds me in places of the player-piano music of Conlon Nancarrow, and in one part has what sounds like a nod to Charles Tomlinson Griffes. The second track has some gorgeous passages, inspired by music the composer played as a child with his father.
