Much to my dismay I am somewhat gently forced to see Boris Godunov....a opera no less, yes I know how is that possible?
I don't now. 12-6-2007, 20:00, 3 hours of maybe torture.
What of it?
Advice, support?

It's a magnificent work; you may like it even better than some Telemann, Harry;)

And the major roles are not sung by sopranos.

Have hidden away in my pocket earplugs for sopranos, for the not major roles, why keep people saying that, I bet its full of sopranos, better take asperines too, or still better the vodka Andrei advised.
Rather listen to a opera by Telemann though. Honestly.

Oh, bite your tongue, mijn vriend!

Why's that, I just being honest.
Please remember that I have never seen a live opera before, and I am 50 now, so that is a statement, no?
Can you by any chance imagine what this means to me, avoiding carefully anything going in that direction.
If I could I would let this cup pass me, or better give away the tickets to someone that will appreciate it more fully as I will.
When I started to do that last Sunday in church, I promptly got another set of tickets.

Then accept it as God's will.

Concentrate on the words...surtitles I assume....it is an intelligent opera for grown-ups.

I wasted time: and time wasted me.

To understand the Russian is no problem for me, but I guess there will be a display with translations.
I'll do my best, but I might be changed Wednesday.

karlhenning

Harry, your doubts aside, you're going to love it!  Embrace this opera!

Just think about what'll happen if you'll like it. There'll be hundreds more CDs for you to buy.  :D

I sincerly hope you are right, but considering I have not one opera of that time in my collection, I have sincere doubts.
But its all out of my hands. Just got a telephone call,  confirming that I will be fetched from home, so there is no escaping.

Changed in what way? You mean Boris-intolerant, or perhaps changed into a frog and not be allowed admission anyway? Dream on.

That would be absolute horror!
No, that could never happen, I blatantly refuse even the thought.
Well what if it would happen, blimey................

My wife Owlice also has an aversion to sopranos, and she was thrilled, moved and delighted by the Kirov production of Boris at the Kennedy Center a couple of years ago.

(Of course they performed the 1869 version which lacks the role of Marina)

Boris will be a life-changing experience in the best sense, Harry  8)

No, that scenario with changing into a frog is unacceptable, but for me this is quite a undertaking, and my friends know that. I so long raved against this kind of opera, that they found now the ultimate punishment for all that. Otherwise I would have gone to the Royal Ballet.
