Been thinking about what I do for a living: advertising. I've reached the conclusion that while it has its rewards, it's begun to bore me silly. I guess I've come to that point in any career where one says to oneself, 'And why, exactly, are you still doing this?' My only answer is the money, and frankly, that has to be about the worst motivator there is. We spend so much of our lives working that we have to enjoy (at least some of the time) what we do, right? Well, I no longer do enjoy it. Trouble is, I've yet to come up with an alternative. I expect everyone feels like this now and again. I've felt like it for almost 18 months. Hmm ... time to put on my thinking cap and work out my next move.

So, how about all of you? Enjoy your jobs?

karlhenning

I enjoy my jobs, but then, too, I have my music to keep my mind engaged.

So I'm not sure where my response will serve the poll  8)

I think it was my moustache that scared people at my job interviews... Maybe it came off as pompous?

I wouldnt work at Macdonald's, but I did apply there and got turned down!

Have you thought of going into business for yourself?

Yes. I'm self-employed already. I think it's my line of work that I no longer enjoy.

Well, you should always consider podiatry, theres nothing wrong with the feet.  :D

karlhenning

If there's nothing wrong with the feet, what's the need for a podiatrist, then?  8)

I'm in the opposite boat.  I enjoy my job but I don't make any money which occasionally leads me to ask "why am I doing this".

I like my job, but it doesn't bring home much money -- as expected, it's a video store. I suppose it's a normal job for a 20-year old not yet in college.

I'm retired now but yeah, I loved my job surprisingly...well, except the part where they were shooting at me and trying to blow me up with grenades. That kinda sucked.

Yes, that the part I hate too, and I'm working in an hospital. I always try to convince my co-workers that dialogue is much more constructive and everyone make mistakes sometime.

I have been working for several years with Quality/Regulatory Affairs in the pharmaceutical industry. I find the pharmaceutical companies very orientated towards money and shareholders. And that doesn't really motivate me, even if the tasks can be challenging and interesting. Also I find this industry cynical; e.g. in my last company they had a Human Resources policy every year to get rid of the 10 % with lowest grades/scores in the performance rating. I don't think that gives a good working environment.

So I recently changed job to work in the microbiological laboratory of a major hospital with quality assurance (QA systems are very important as they're giving out answers for e.g. HIV tests). Here the focus is the patient and not so much the money. A bit less payment, but it feels more meaningful and hence motivating for me.
