The Canadian ice dancing team is dancing to the Adagietto from symphony no. 5!  The music will have to be cut in order to fit the program, but what a relief to hear real music (although Stravinsky's Fire Bird was used, the routine was pure hokum) with great athleticism.

Terrifyingly predictable.  I knew it would be the Adagietto even before I read your post.
Other possibilities they could have used:
The Andante amoroso from the Seventh, albeit with the trimming and hacking.
The third or fourth movements of the Third.
Urlicht
Any of individual songs from Kindertotenlieder, Ruckert Lieder or Fahrenden Gesellen...

Bunny

I don't care that it's predictable, because in a sport where they like show tunes and think that Andrew Lloyd Webber is the height of drama.  Mahler adds a real touch of class and the skating was exquisite.

Reuters:  VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir had home fans leaping to their feet as the Canadians ended 34-years of European domination to win the Olympic ice dance gold medal on Monday.
Virtue and Moir's stirring performance to Mahler's Symphony No. 5 raised the domed roof at the Pacific Coliseum after they were awarded a combined total of 221.57 points. They beat Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White by 5.83 points.

Sounds great.
Very nice Bunny, I'll find it somewhere and watch it.

Already posted on Youtube?!  Wow!

Nice!  :) I mentioned it also in the "Olympic" thread.

They also could have used the Andante from #6!  :D

Actually, classical music is used very often in figure skating routines.  Perhaps a little less nowadays.

I heard that "Night on Bare Mountain" was used in figure skating this year. That's just plain bizarre.

That was for men's figure skating, and it wasn't that bizarre.  What I find bizarre is the fact that so many of the men were wearing black gloves.  That really looked strange -- black skates, black skintight leg covering, black and sequined tops and black gloves.  Just a white face sticking out on top.  I guess the next thing will be black stockings over the face.  Then they can skate to Danse Macabre and look like a wraith.

I do not recall if it was heard during figure skating or ice dancing, but for their routine somebody used the opening movement of the Saint-Saens Symphony #3!   :o
