An interesting thing. I was walking home from town earlier, and heard several smoke alarms inside suburban houses. As I continued to walk down, more went off. Several people came outside saying that they weren't even cooking anything and could smell no smoke outside.

Volcanic interferance? ;D

;D I did get that eerie feeling - maybe they were set to detect social awkwardness - oh gods, now everybody around me knows! :'(

My brother is scheduled to fly from Chicago to London on Thursday, 4/22, in preparation of running in the London Marathon on Sunday, 4/25, then on to France for a break.  He says the airline has told him that if his flight goes, they will honor his reservation.  Does anyone know what the air quality in London is like?  He's a little concerned about what he'll be breathing during the Marathon, assuming he gets there to run it.

Hi secondwind - did your brother make it over? It's a bit late now, but for what it's worth, the people on a running forum I post on who've entered aren't particularly concerned beyond the logistical problems of getting there. Perhaps he could defer his entry if he misses the flight?

I consulted the Royal Mail web site.  Packages dispatched from the UK to the US during the height of the crisis were sent by ship, expected arrival April 30 or later.   >:(

So your CDs go steerage. I hope there are no icebergs.

Thanks, Novi.  David flew into London on Thursday and is preparing for the race tomorrow. Good to know that he won't ruin his lungs doing this (he would run regardless).

At the start of the week the air quality was sufficiently poor that there was serious consideration given to cancelling the event. But it is now much better, especially as the wind direction changed.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili flew from US to Cracow, Poland and had no problem at all!

Everlasting shame to the EU leaders and Barack Obama, who proved that all their talk about solidarity with Poland was just that: talk!
