Hello, new to forum.  I love record collecting, and enjoy listening to "Golden Age of Stereo" recordings.  I like the Romantic period, as well as the 20th Century stuff when it is recorded well.

Currently listening to Marius Constant - 24 Preludes pour Orchestra - DGG 139 171 an amazing piece of work.

I love making my own CD-Rs from vintage vinyl when it is in nice condition.  My latest creation is a needle drop of:  VARÈSE: Arcana / MARTIN : Concerto for 7 wind instruments, timpani, percussion & strings – Jean Martinon, Chicago Symphony Orchestra RCA LIVING STEREO LSC 2914

These are some really nice sounding recordings.

Hi Jeff, and welcome to GMG.  You will find others here who share your love of stereo recordings from that period.  If we are talking about the same Marius Constant LP, I have it, with Christian Ferras!  Also has a piece by Serge Nigg, his Violin Concerto.  Haven't listened to that recording in 20 years, since I currently don't have a turntable, but I held on to the LP anyway.   :D

Welcome!

It is an amazing record, at least for those that can handle a very avant-garde listen.  It was out originally on DG, and had a US issue on Heliodor/MGM that is a bit easier to find.

Not sure if it got a CD issue or not, but I am making my own CD-R of this baby.

LA currently, but I have lived in Newport Beach, and 9 mos. in the SF Valley.

How is Austria?  Now that's a change of pace.

Welcome, Jeff.  As soon as I saw "vintage vinyl" I was pumped, as I am just starting to explore this area in classical music..  Hope to get tips from you on future purchases.  Recently I grabbed these:

All shaded dogs for the RCA's:

Along with:

Mercury SR90208 Haydn Symphony No. 94 and 103 Dorati/Philharmonic Hungarcia

and a London "blue back" Schubert No. 9 Krips/LSO

Your comments on any of these is most welcome and appreciated.

I've never heard a RCA LSC Shaded Dog I didn't like!  Mercury Living Presence might have the better sounding CDs from the 90s.

Oh, and speaking of the RCA LSC line, those SACDs of RCA Living Stereo albums are about the best deal around, and they sound more like the LPs (warmer) than the CDs do.  I hear they can be found for pennies over $10 a disc.

But anyway, this stuff you have posted pictures of is right up my alley.  I really don't think it ever got any better.

So whereabouts in L.A.? It's a big city.

Well, I was born in Hollywood, grew up in Eagle Rock, spent all of our childhood summer vacations in Newport Beach and I also lived in the San Fernando Valley (Sherman Oaks). Small world indeed... ;D

I love living in Vienna and it is quite a change of pace from the crazy world of L.A.  The pace is much slower here, much cleaner air and way less crime (just the way I like it). We even have the occasional earthquake here in Austria which makes me feel like I am back in L.A.  8)

I'm near Beverly Blvd. and Crescent Hts, West LA but near West Hollywood.

I love it for now, but would like to move to where you are when I am older.  I'd liike slower pace, nicer air, and laid back beautiful place.  This feels right for a young creative person like me, but not an older person who would like to settle down somewhat.

I've recently started selling Classical music rather than just the rock and jazz I used to sell.  More stuff going to China and Hong Kong in last 3 months than ever.

They really like RCA and Mercury over in China I have noticed.

But anyway, I love LA as I said, I just need an escape plan for when I am 60, which is a ways to go.

I have a dozens years to go, by which time (or before) I will sponsor a chamber music program (quartet plus a pianist, I am thinking) that plays twice a months for fun, mostly in home or club (book club, etc.) performances by invitation only. Do drop by then! Teach some English on the side, you can stay for a while, too.

So, do you haunt Amoeba Music?  We have very close friends in Beverly Glenn and I make it a point to drop by each time we visit.

Amoeba is work to go to.  Work to park, work to look through.

Plus I am spolied by the good old days of use vinyl/CD stores in the early 80s to late 90s.  Those were the years, great deals, lots of selection, and better music imo.

So I kinda get depressed looking at all the high prices in stores compared to what is used to be like, and what I LPs/CDs can get used online.

I hate to sound like an old man, but it did used to be more fun to shop.

I can see that.  There are only two decent record shows here each year.  The lot above I got at the last show.  I have not yet taken the used on-line plunge yet, but I am getting close.  I mainly look for new pressings if I order on-line.  Pricey, but the sound so far has been top-shelf.

Wow! What are the odds that someone in China once lived in my home town of Eagle Rock. Usually when I tell people that I grew up in Eagle Rock they have never heard of it and always ask me where is it located. My answer to that is that "Eagle Rock is located between Pasadena and Glendale". Now I can tell people that Barack Obama attended Occidental College (which is located in Eagle Rock) for two years from 1979-81 before transferring to Columbia University.

Geez, I was almost a schoolmate of the president! I almost went to Oxy. But instead I went to Cal State LA via s tay in PCC (because I couldn't afford Oxy). 1400 Colorado Blvd. is about 50 yards from Cindy's Restaurant, and 100 yards from Trader Joe's. And I often played baseball with friends right under that Eagle Rock.
