Arg!!! So annoying - what is this?!

I have had this little motive stuck in my head all of today and I can't place it - I can't think what comes before or after it. I know I know the piece very well too!

The notes are: (though maybe not in the right key)

C__________________ B__________________ C_ F_

the lines give approximate durations!! the last two notes are possibly on flute... and the first two are long held string notes.

This must be the beginning of Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) by Richard Strauss. Exactly the pitches, durations and instrumentation you wrote!

Yay! You are right! I often surprise myself by how accurate my pitch memory is - I don't have perfect pitch, but I often remember things in the right key (when I sing them), though perhaps this is as much to do with sensitivity to the tone colour of intruments at various pitches (especially strings) when I imagine them... maybe not...
