Hello All

I used to post a bit on this bit board ~5-6 years ago, so i'm pleased its still going strong and I even recognise some of the names!

Felt like I should 'get back on the horse' so to speak, although perhaps this time I will be able to dispense a bit of advice (or should that be prejudice) rather than receive it now with fairly more music having passed through the ears since I was at Uni.

I now live in Sheffield, not only the proud home of the concert hall with the worst acoustic in Britain, the largest city in Europe without a resident professional orchestra -lucky me!

Try to get to Manchester to see the Halle /BBC Phil a bit though, and Music In The Round is always good, anyway nice to be back, and hopefully I'll be posting any wisdom that comes my way soon.

We can use a few more Paul's around here! It's not been the same without you and paulb. (Wait, maybe I shouldn't bundle you two in the same sentence...)

Welcome back!
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

There's a few candidates for that trophy!  Do you mean the City Hall?  My first concert there was Led Zeppelin in 1970 - my ears rang for days afterwards.  Happy times. ;D

I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees in City Hall in 1985 (I think) but never heard a classical concert there. Are the acoustics really that bad? Oh, well, Manchester with its lovely Bridgewater Hall is only a short hop away by train.

I do indeed mean the City Hall, unfortunately its one of those all purpose venues so I haven't got a 'Whole Lotta Love' for it.

Yes they are, I find the best solution is to go as near as the front as possible to give the hall as little chance to ruin the sound before it reaches my ears, worse still they fairly often have comedy / disco nights in the smaller hall in the same building at the same time -just what you need.

I try and get to the Bridgwater Hall a fair bit, got to 5 Mahler concerts there (3,6,7,9,10) during the recent run.

Ooh, nice! I've only been there the once (Mahler 1, Elder, 2007, I think) but was very impressed by the hall and the rejuvenated Hallé. I wish I'd been able to head up north more often for the Mahler concerts in Manchester and Liverpool. I've heard some really good reports here and there.

Paul, Welcome. Hope you do dispense some knowledge and as you must know, we take what prejudice we can get.

I am sometimes in Manchester, Liverpool or Newcastle....but NEVER on the right nights. I need to be better organised.

I've not seen a concert in the Sage in Newcastle yet. I've been inside the foyer a few times and love the setting overlooking the river. Have you been to any concerts there, Mike?

I've been to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall a few times (saw a wonderful Berio Sinfonia there in 2008, and caught the adorable Vasily  Petrenko in action last year with Hindemith, Bartok and Rachmaninov).

MDL, No, I go for work and the dates are not of my choosing. There never seems to be a concert on the evening I am there, often I am a day out!

I keep meaning to go there myself to sample the acoustic, but havent got round to it yet -didn't look like there was anything too thrilling this season -certainly nothing to warrant a trip up there.

Paul - great to see you back and looking forward to your contributions!   :)

Hello Paul

Although I am just a newbie, I did see you are in the UK.  I enjoy discussing Edward Elgar and especially his enigma if you are interested.
